Gr 7 Up—Ahsoka Tano holds a special place in the hearts of many "Star Wars" aficionados. The breakout character of the Star Wars: The Clone Wars TV show finally gets her story told, and fans will not be disappointed. After leaving the order of the Jedis and her teacher Padawan Anakin Skywalker, Ahsoka embarks on a journey to discover who she is and how she can move on after leaving the group that has defined her for so long. She ends up on Raada, a small, out-of-the-way moon base, and begins a new life. When the evil Imperial forces rear their heads, Ahsoka's newly idyllic life starts to sour, and she can't help but heed the familiar call of the Rebel Alliance. Teens will be able to relate to Ahsoka's emotional journey of attempting to find her place in the world. The plot moves at a slow pace in the first half as Ahsoka tries to deal with her emotions and figure things out. Those who have little to no knowledge of The Clone Wars and Rebels TV shows will be lost, as Johnston gives almost no background on the title character's previous adventures. VERDICT "Star Wars" devotees will rejoice in reading this long-awaited chapter in the life of a fan favorite; others may want to skip this one.—Christopher Lassen, BookOps: The New York Public Library and Brooklyn Public Library

Ahsoka finally gets her own novel - and it was worth the wait! ***very mild spoilers***
By Mediocre Jedi
E.K. Johnston’s Star Wars: Ahsoka begins following the adventures of the Togrutan Force user exactly one year after the establishment of the Galactic Empire. This Young Adult novel is intended for ages 12-18 and grades 7-12. However, this 40-year-old reviewer loved the book, mainly due to my unashamed love of Ahsoka Tano and The Clone Wars. Here are some of the highlights.

Jedi Padawan Ahsoka Tano was first introduced in the Star Wars: The Clone Wars animated series and quickly became a fan favorite. Viewers watched her grow from a “snippy,” brash padawan learner to a confident young warrior who frequently saved the day for her master, Anakin Skywalker. Thrust into the crucible of combat with the besieged clone battalion and their Jedi on the planet of Christophsis, Ahsoka had to learn quickly and be a strong warrior from an early age. Through the remainder of the Clone Wars, Ahsoka was present at several key battles and forged tight relationships with many, including Clone Captain Rex, the astromech R2-D2, and Senator Bail Organa. All three of these characters figure into Ahsoka in important ways.

*** VERY MILD SPOILERS FOLLOW***

The novel features many flashbacks, interludes, and scenes which answer some lingering questions since the end of The Clone Wars, raise a few more, and provide detail that help link the prequel and original trilogies. Here are some of my favorites:

' Maul and Ahsoka at Mandalore
' Ahsoka’s last interaction with Rex (until Star Wars Rebels reunites them)
' Insight into Anakin’s thoughts as “Obi-Wan’s new padawan” approaches Christophsis
' Obi-Wan’s solitude – and finding an old friend – on Tatooine
' The origin of Ahsoka’s white lightsabers and the codename Fulcrum
' Ahsoka’s thoughts about Barriss Offee

Most of the plot of the novel centers on Ahsoka’s life as she maintains a low profile to avoid attention from the Empire. She has to find odd jobs to get by, and tries not to form close relationships with others. Her connection with the Force is weakened. She thinks of the “family” she has lost due to the destruction of the Jedi Order, and searches her feelings to try to discern Anakin’s fate. Readers can feel her loneliness. Ahsoka has always been a jovial, outgoing person, quick to make friends and gain others’ trust. As it turns out, her charisma and leadership qualities have not suffered since the end of The Clone Wars; she continues to draw others to her and gain their trust, despite her efforts to live a simple life. As can be expected, she quickly finds herself at the center of a conflict. Also as can be expected, she must decide between using the Force to save the day, thus exposing herself, and maintaining her anonymity and allowing her new friends to suffer.

Overall, E.K. Johnston absolutely matches the feel of The Clone Wars and Star Wars Rebels. Ahsoka does a fantastic job of bridging the gap, though it does not account for the entire time period between Ahsoka leaving the Jedi Order and her first appearance at the end of the first season of the current cartoon series. Perhaps there are more books forthcoming – hopefully also penned by Johnston!

Ahsoka is also available as an audiobook narrated by Ashley Eckstein. Eckstein, of course, is the only actor who has ever voiced Ahsoka's character. For what it's worth, I could hear Ashley reading all of Ahsoka's lines in my head when I read the print version. It's unavoidable.

Fans of Ahsoka Tano, The Clone Wars, and Star Wars Rebels will devour this book. Highly recommended.

A long-awaited journey into the mind of a Jedi No More.
By Atsushi Kanamori
This review contains mild spoilers for the book, as well as major spoilers for "The Clone Wars."

"I have to sort this out on my own. Without the Council. And without you."

And with those words, former Jedi Ahsoka Tano walked off into the sunset three long years ago, bringing "The Clone Wars" to a powerful and poignant end, but leaving millions of viewers in an emotional lurch, wondering where her loyalties would turn and what path she would follow now that the entire foundation of her 18-year old life had been torn asunder.

Two years later, in her celebrated return to the screen on "Rebels", we'd learn what she'd become - an intelligence agent for the burgeoning Rebellion, but not how she decided to walk that path. "Rebels" was told through the eyes of the Ghost crew, not her, so she remained closed and mysterious, while fans clamored for answers.

And now, finally, three and half years of viewer speculation, mind-canon and fan stories, the gloves have come off. For the first time, LFL takes us directly into the mind of this fascinating character that for many, including many outside her surface demographic, has become the eyes and ears through which they view the GFFA. Her feelings and conclusions about the Jedi Order, the Republic, the betrayal of Barris Offee, her abandonment of the Order that had failed her, and how she'll cope with her post-Jedi life - it's all here now in this 350+ page work by EK Johnston in her inaugural Star Wars novel.

This is a unabashedly character-oriented story, and the first to be crafted not under the direct control of the titular character's creator Dave Filoni, and as such, the most important question is does Johnston understand what makes Ahsoka tick?

And the answer is, absolutely. This is the authentic Ahsoka. Even though I'm reading the dead-tree version rather than the audiobook, I had not the slightest problem hearing Ashley Eckstein's voice or picturing a slightly older version of the "Clone Wars" Ahsoka (despite the fact that for whatever reason, the Rebels version of the character has dominated LFL's marketing and merchandising the past year.)

More importantly than the mental aesthetics, her emotions and motivations make sense. This is a war-weary and emotionally damaged Ahsoka - stripped of the innocence and naiveté about the true nature of the Jedi she held through so much of the series, but her persistence, kindness and basic optimism hasn't been destroyed - merely severely tested.

And tested it is. The story makes clear from the outset what a dire position our favorite Togruta is in. Everyone she once counted on and valued is gone. She remains powerful in the Force but cannot reveal it or use it in combat, for that would endanger her and those around her. But far more than the physical threat, every path she could take feels like a trap. She's rejected the doctrine of the old Jedi Order and for good reasons - she can't detach from everything and everyone and become a cold, unfeeling monk like Kenobi laser-focused on a single investment for the future - that's just not her. But nor can she become the warrior and general that she once was - she's seen in the most personal way what that can lead a Jedi to. The horrific transformation of her best friend Barris Offee from a gentle healer to a murderous terrorist who could only lash out destructively at what the Jedi had become still tears at her. Her trust in people has also been shaken - Ahsoka has seen the corruption and fall of every institution she was once loyal to, and faced personal betrayal at their hands. This shows up in the story when even when joyously reunited with a dear old friend that's fought beside her for countless battles, there's a distance - neither one can be fully open or forthcoming with other about the secrets they hold.

And on top of all of that, she bears a heavy burden of survivor's guilt as (to her knowledge) all the other Jedi were wiped out in Order 66. She had good reasons to leave the Order but still feels like she abandoned her Master and her friends. Even knowing that much of that time was spent helping build the very Empire that's now oppressing the galaxy.

Is that enough feels, anyone?

Another plus is that much of "The Clone Wars" lore is present and impactful in the story - Johnston has clearly done her homework. Though introduced in 2008 as the padawan of Anakin Skywalker, Ahsoka was actually a planned character in the series long before Lucas insisted on giving Anakin and other prequel characters a major role in the series. And fittingly, Ahsoka did not spend the series merely following Anakin around as his sidekick. She had a character arc of her own and many characters, including those outside the Jedi orthodoxy, influenced her education and growth. From Padme Amidala, she learned that the direct approach (Anakin) wasn't the only way to tackle a problem - this influences Ahsoka's strategy at one point in the story. The friendships she formed with various senators - a life form often viewed as lower than anything short of a Sith by many in the Jedi upper echelons, pays off here as one particular Senator, Bail Organa has worked with her and knows that she can be a trusted ally. All this serves to make Ahsoka the layered, multifaceted character she is. She bears no malice against the Jedi but understands how they failed during the Clone Wars and the rise of Palpatine and how her personal path can't be the same as theirs.

And finding that path is what this novel is about. It's about connecting and communicating with people and the importance of that. The prequel-era Jedi were well-meaning but had lost touch with the ability to communicate with those that don't fit their mold. When Hayden Christensen talks to Yoda about his fears of losing a close on in Episode 3, Yoda's advice amounts to "About to lose a loved one are you? Rejoice!" Real helpful there. Insulated in their ivory tower, the Jedi lost their connection with the everyman and this only served Palpatine in turning public sentiment against the Jedi and solidifying his power. Through the events of this novel, Ahsoka finds the middle ground between detaching entirely from the affairs of the galaxy and suffering of the common people under the Sheev Administration, and repeating the mistakes of the old Jedi Order - spreading war and darkness throughout the galaxy that helped conceal the darkness that was right under their noses. She becomes the shadowy vigilante, bringing acts of kindness to people and increasing the amount of light in the galaxy. Knowledge and communication becomes her weapon against the Empire as she takes on the mantle of the intelligence agent Fulcrum.

Having said what this book is about, it's important to understand what the book isn't (and doesn't strive to be.) This is not a story about the yet unproduced arcs of The Clone Wars. Filoni clearly still hopes to produce these in animation some day, as that's the medium those stories were written for. This is also not a chronicle of the entire 15 year gap between Clone Wars and Rebels - the story picks up about a year after Order 66 and covers maybe a few months of her life. This is not the definitive story of Ahsoka (there's a little show called "The Clone Wars" that serves that purpose.) There are still plenty of stories to tell about her. Though the path of Fulcrum is probably the best for Ahsoka at this point in her life, nobody who knows this character would believe it's an easy one. She'll still be making decisions that send people to their deaths (as in "Rebel Resolve" in season 1 of Rebels), and it's a life of subterfuge and deception - not one of her core strengths. The PR for the book did say "her story will begin to be told." and there are plenty of stories left to tell, some of the seeds of which this book seem to be laying.

So thank you, LFL for bringing this novel to us, but know that we still have an appetite for more. Bring on "Star Wars: Fulcrum!"

Excellent!
By Jeramy Lord
I am a lifetime fan of Star Wars. Now I have two children and I am loving introducing them to the Universe that has brought me so much joy.

My six year old and I have watched every episode of Clone Wars at least a dozen times. Ahsoka is our favorite character, and from the moment she left the show, we wondered what happened to her. Then we started watching Rebels, and we were besides ourselves when she showed up again. We have talked a lot about what she has been up to and I couldn't be happier with this friggin book.

This was the missing Chapter of her story, told the way it needed to be told, with total fidelity to Ahsoka's character. Excellent. Just plain excellent!

The Stranger, by Albert Camus

Through the story of an ordinary man unwittingly drawn into a senseless murder on an Algerian beach, Camus explored what he termed "the nakedness of man faced with the absurd." First published in 1946; now in a new translation by Matthew Ward.

Amazon.com Review
The Stranger is not merely one of the most widely read novels of the 20th century, but one of the books likely to outlive it. Written in 1946, Camus's compelling and troubling tale of a disaffected, apparently amoral young man has earned a durable popularity (and remains a staple of U.S. high school literature courses) in part because it reveals so vividly the anxieties of its time. Alienation, the fear of anonymity, spiritual doubt--all could have been given a purely modern inflection in the hands of a lesser talent than Camus, who won the Nobel Prize in 1957 and was noted for his existentialist aesthetic. The remarkable trick of The Stranger, however, is that it's not mired in period philosophy.

The plot is simple. A young Algerian, Meursault, afflicted with a sort of aimless inertia, becomes embroiled in the petty intrigues of a local pimp and, somewhat inexplicably, ends up killing a man. Once he's imprisoned and eventually brought to trial, his crime, it becomes apparent, is not so much the arguably defensible murder he has committed as it is his deficient character. The trial's proceedings are absurd, a parsing of incidental trivialities--that Meursault, for instance, seemed unmoved by his own mother's death and then attended a comic movie the evening after her funeral are two ostensibly damning facts--so that the eventual sentence the jury issues is both ridiculous and inevitable.

Meursault remains a cipher nearly to the story's end--dispassionate, clinical, disengaged from his own emotions. "She wanted to know if I loved her," he says of his girlfriend. "I answered the same way I had the last time, that it didn't mean anything but that I probably didn't." There's a latent ominousness in such observations, a sense that devotion is nothing more than self-delusion. It's undoubtedly true that Meursault exhibits an extreme of resignation; however, his confrontation with "the gentle indifference of the world" remains as compelling as it was when Camus first recounted it. --Ben Guterson

From Library Journal
The new translation of Camus's classic is a cultural event; the translation of Cocteau's diary is a literary event. Both translations are superb, but Ward's will affect a naturalized narrative, while Browner's will strengthen Cocteau's reemerging critical standing. Since 1946 untold thousands of American students have read a broadly interpretative, albeit beautifully crafted British Stranger . Such readers have closed Part I on "door of undoing" and Part II on "howls of execration." Now with the domestications pruned away from the text, students will be as close to the original as another language will allow: "door of unhappiness" and "cries of hate." Browner has no need to "write-over" another translation. With Cocteau's reputation chiefly as a cineaste until recently, he has been read in French or not at all. Further, the essay puts a translator under less pressure to normalize for readers' expectations. Both translations show the current trend to stay closer to the original. Review
“The Stranger is a strikingly modern text and Matthew Ward’s translation will enable readers to appreciate why Camus’s stoical anti-hero and devious narrator remains one of the key expressions of a postwar Western malaise, and one of the cleverest exponents of a literature of ambiguity.” –from the Introduction by Peter Dunwoodie

An existentialist tour de force of literature
By Daniel Jolley
The Stranger is a haunting, challenging masterpiece of literature. While it is fiction, it actually manages to express the complex concepts and themes of existential philosophy better than the movement's most noted philosophical writings and almost as well as Dostoyevsky's Notes From the Underground. This is a new kind of literature. The story in and of itself is rather simple, but the glimpses into the intellect and feelings of the protagonist are the sources of the magic of this novel. M.Meursault is a normal man in Algiers, France. When we meet him, he is on the way to his mother's funeral, where he says very little, expresses no remorse over her death, and immediately returns home. The next day, he goes swimming, meets Marie, takes her to see a comedy that night, and spends the next few weeks living his normal life and occassionally seeing Marie. He ends up getting indirectly involved in a dispute between his neighbor Raymond and a girl who did him wrong, and the conflict culminates in an encounter on the beach between Raymond, Meursault, and the girl's Arab brother and friend. Raymond is cut with a knife, but the whole episode seems to be resolved. Meursault, though, decides later to take another walk on the beach because he is too worn out to go inside and rejoin his friends, and somewhat inexplicably he ends up killing one of the Arabs. The second half of the novel examines Meursault's thoughts in relation to his trial and sentence; interestingly, he is prosecuted as much if not more for his moral character than for the crime of murder itself.
Basically, Meursault does not care about anything, does not feel anything for anyone (including himself, for the most part). He looks at life objectively and determines that it really doesn't matter whether he does something or not in the overall scheme of things. When Marie expresses her love for him, he tells her he will marry her if it will make her happy but that he cannot say he really loves her. He expresses no remorse for killing the Arab because it just happened; he had no intention of doing it, but the fact is that he did, so there's little point in dwelling on it. He cares about the present and, to a lesser degree, the future, but the past is meaningless for the very reason that it is the past. Meursault sees things as they are; rather than rely on flights of fantasy and imagination (the typical tools of the Romanticists), he deals with facts in the here and now rather than run from them and has no problem admitting the seemingly obvious fact that man is a creature of utter depravity. He rejects religion; since each man must eventually die, what does it matter what he does while on earth. It is a man's hopes and dreams that weigh down his very existence; Marsault can only find happiness by cleansing himself of all such illusory notions.
Needless to say, this is not an uplifting book, but it is an engaging, thought-provoking one. While Camus cannot be called a true existentialist in his own philosophical outlook, his fiction does epitomize many existentialist ideas. Marsault is a protagonist like no other in literature--you cannot like him, he is obviously guilty of killing a man in cold blood, and he is of a cold-hearted nature, yet you do understand some of his thinking, find yourself more and more interested in his dark outlook on life, and have to admit that much of what he believes makes sense.

Philosophically Deep and Moving Book
By David Swan
When I first started reading `The Stranger' by Albert Camus it seemed rather dull. It's a first person account from a somewhat bland character named Meursault, the titular `Stranger'. While working my way through the book I had to wonder if an alternate translation, `The Outsider', would be more appropriate for `L'Étranger'. Meursault is a Frenchmen living on Algeria but in no way is he a stranger. He has a circle of friends, a job and even a girlfriend. What sets him apart from humanity is his possibly pathological indifference to just about anything whether it be abuse of a dog, abuse of a woman or even the death of his own mother. Not that he engages in abuse it's just that he seems unaffected by the suffering of others. Other descriptions I've read on this book have described Meursault as honest to a fault with this being his downfall. I'm not sure that gives people the correct impression. Meursault's honesty is not the kind where you tell a fat woman she's fat. His downfall is more his inability to feign sorrow, regret or empathy. When his girlfriend asks if he loves her he considers it and answers "no" without any thought that the answer might be painful to hear. About half way through the book, in a bizarre set of circumstances, Meursault ends up killing a man and when asked by the police if he feels regret he says he never looks on the past with regret and in this case feels only vexation. There is no evident malice only utter insensitivity.

Philosophically The Stranger is one of the most intriguing and moving books I have ever read particularly the final act where Meursault confronts the priest who attempts to lead him to the Christian God in the last days before his execution. Despite the perceived indifference he exhibits throughout the book Meursault has a consistent and well defined philosophy of existence. In this moment Meursault disgorges everything he has on the hapless priest and lays bare his soul (so to speak). Knowing that his death is but weeks, days or perhaps hours away, he achieves a moment of clarity seeing his place in the universe, a universe even more indifferent than himself. Camus never absolves him of his crime but in a sense Meursault rises above the simple act of killing a man, above his imprisonment and above life itself. He achieves full acceptance of his existence and place in the universe and in that moment transcends life and God. I`m genuinely saddened that I'm not able to read the final chapter in its original French. If the translation is this good I can hardly imagine how amazing the original must be.

This is the kind of book that one could read and ponder over and over again and I have a feeling I will. There is a considerable amount of symbolism throughout particularly the scorching sun which seems to continually oppress Meursault until he can take it no more. It starts off very slowly and builds throughout. I've never been on trial and certainly never been on death row but Camus gave Meursault an inner dialogue that rang so true it felt more real than any other portrayal I've seen or read. Despite his crime and often callous view of the suffering of others Camus created a character so real and open to the reader that I couldn't help but pity him terribly for his situation but in the end Meursault found peace regardless of the outcome. If you haven't read this book you really should and it's a short read so if you don't find it as profound as I did at least you wont have to endure it for long.

A powerfully disturbing and bleak novel
By Robert Moore
Although Albert Camus had achieved some fame as a journalist in his native Algiers in the thirties and as a writer for the French resistance during WW II, he first achieved an international critical reputation with the publication of this classic novel in 1946. The portrait of the detached, unfeeling, uncommitted, amoral, perpetually abstracted Meursault is one of the most haunting in 20th century literature. For many, it is the supreme 20th century literary depiction of nihilism. Unquestionably it is one of the premier literary efforts of the century, though Camus managed several other books just as powerful and superb in their own way, in particular THE PLAGUE, THE MYTH OF SISYPHUS, and THE FALL.
Meursault reminds me so much of figures from the paintings of Manet. In painting after painting, Manet depicted individuals alone in crowds, failing or refusing to interact or even acknowledge the others in the frame. In one famous painting, a lower middle class girl sits alone in her own little orb, sitting beside an upper class gentleman, neither acknowledging the existence of the other, both self-contained, seemingly detached from the busy world surrounding them. Behind them, a barmaid drinks a beer, equally oblivious to everyone and everything around her. They might all be on separate desert islands. Manet repeats this in painting after painting. Meursault seems almost as if he had stepped out of one of those paintings. He can at least communicate with others, socialize with them, but he cannot express strong moral sentiments or develop affectionate (as opposed to sexual) attachments.
This is not a happy book. The story deals with Meursault's almost accidental killing of an Arab whose sister had been harmed by one of his acquaintances, but the novel trivializes everything--the killing, his subsequent arrest, his imprisonment, his trial and conviction, and his sentencing. The closest the novel comes to a happy sentiment is near the end when Meursault imagines how much nicer it would be to witness an execution rather than be executed, to have to puke in revulsion than to literally lose one's head to the guillotine.
Camus would never write such a despairing book again. THE PLAGUE the next year would come close, but not close, while THE FALL would seem almost optimistic and upbeat in comparison. But for those who want to find perhaps the quintessential expression of what we like to think of as existentialism, this could stand as the premier literary instance.

Needs Updating in Acctg Processes
By Joyce
For a book on Information Systems, I would have expected the examples on accounting functions to be more up-to-date with current business practices rather than the archaic processes that were included.
Unfortunately, my instructor taught "by the book" and I was forced to relearn all the old ways of doing things such as forgoing using a lockbox for receiving cash and having two people in the mail room open the checks and manually write a deposit slip. Who has time for that?
Have the authors of this book not heard of process improvement, automation, Six Sigma? Trust me, the companies out there certainly have and that's what employees' success is judged against.
Teaching college students who have never worked in an Accounting Dept a process that hasn't been used in years is doing them a disservice. The Universities should expect current version textbooks to actually be updated with current business practices and then teach current business practices. Challenge themselves to actually produce graduates who won't feel behind the curve when they're out looking for a job up against those who have work experience. Put them ahead of the curve by teaching them Best Practice for their field. What a concept. It starts with truly up-to-date textbooks.

Great AIS book
By Kelly Vautrain
This is really a great textbook. It is almost entertaining to read because they use the same examples for several chapters at a time. Really outlines AIS. The self quizzes at the end of the chapters are really helpful and the problems are useful and not tedious.

Disappointing--grammatical errors and dated graphics
By Raspberry
When I purchase a book in this price range, I have a level of expectations that I think is pretty reasonable (considering I've spent about $3000-4000 on books for college). First off, the book is littered with typos and grammatical errors. Attention to detail please! And then the graphics circa 1985 are embarrassing. I get it, sometimes graphics are just easier left as is, but for a few extra bucks, updated colorful graphics would have been a nice touch.

I am a non-techie, and I have found the book rather laborious at times to read. I have had other subjects in my college career which I didn't think I would enjoy much *until* I read the assigned textbook. This book makes me want to know even less about information systems. It is boring and sometimes rather repetitive in the wrong ways. I find my mind wandering, so the writing is not very engaging for non-techie students like me.

The examples, however, are usually helpful, so there is that positive. I wish I could like this book more--computers are a major part of any type of work, but this is just one of those classes in which I'm simply going through the motions to get it over with. If it had been more engaging, maybe I would have ended up liking the course I am in and learning something. Meh. There's always hope for the next edition.

With the advent of wavelength routing and dynamic, reconfigurable optical networks, new demands are being made in the design and operation of optical amplifiers. This book provides, for the first time, a comprehensive review of optical amplifier technology in the context of these recent advances in the field. It demonstrates how to manage the trade-offs between amplifier design, network architecture and system management and operation.

The book provides an overview of optical amplifiers and reconfigurable networks before examining in greater detail the issues of importance to network operators and equipment manufacturers, including 40G and 100G transmission. Optical amplifier design is fully considered, focusing on fundamentals, design solutions and amplifier performance limitations. Finally, the book discusses other emerging applications for optical amplifiers such as optical networks for high data rate systems, free space systems, long single span links and optical digital networks.

This book will be of great value to R&D engineers, network and systems engineers, telecommunications service providers, component suppliers, industry analysts, network operators, postgraduate students, academics and anyone seeking to understand emerging trends in optical networks and the consequent changes in optical amplifier design, features and applications.

Ten years in the works, Columbine is a masterpiece of reportage. Dave Cullen, the acclaimed journalist who followed the massacre from day one, reconstructs the psychological journey of two teenage boys who became killers. Over the course of this gripping narrative, Cullen approaches his subjects with unrivaled care and insight. What emerges are shattering portraits of the killers, the victims, and the community that suffered one of the most socially and historically important shooting tragedies of the twentieth century.

Starred Review. In this remarkable account of the April 20, 1999, Columbine High School shooting, journalist Cullen not only dispels several of the prevailing myths about the event but tackles the hardest question of all: why did it happen? Drawing on extensive interviews, police reports and his own reporting, Cullen meticulously pieces together what happened when 18-year-old Eric Harris and 17-year-old Dylan Klebold killed 13 people before turning their guns on themselves. The media spin was that specific students, namely jocks, were targeted and that Dylan and Eric were members of the Trench Coat Mafia. According to Cullen, they lived apparently normal lives, but under the surface lay an angry, erratic depressive (Klebold) and a sadistic psychopath (Harris), together forming a combustible pair. They planned the massacre for a year, outlining their intentions for massive carnage in extensive journals and video diaries. Cullen expertly balances the psychological analysis—enhanced by several of the nation's leading experts on psychopathology—with an examination of the shooting's effects on survivors, victims' families and the Columbine community. Readers will come away from Cullen's unflinching account with a deeper understanding of what drove these boys to kill, even if the answers aren't easy to stomach. (Apr. 6)

Many reviewers were more concerned with coming to grips with the attack rather than assessing the book, but their concern may be a testament to Cullen’s work. His reporting fundamentally reframes the event: Columbine, he writes, should be thought of as a failed bombing rather than a school shooting. Furthermore, much of the conventional wisdom about how to prevent such attacks—essentially, watch out for pimply outcasts with a grudge—is confounded by an investigation into Harris’s and Klebold’s actual lives. Most critics, with Janet Maslin a notable exception, thought that Cullen’s account helps us to better wring meaning from the tragedy. In sum, Columbine “is an excellent work of media criticism, showing how legends become truths through continual citation” (New York Times Book Review).

From Booklist
*Starred Review* Although much has been written about the 1999 shooting at Columbine High School, little of it has helped to explain why two high-school students went on a rampage, killing 13 people and wounding scores of others. Cullen, acclaimed expert on Columbine, offers a penetrating look at the motivation and intent of the shooters, Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold. Drawing on interviews, police records, media coverage, and diaries and videotapes left behind by the shooters, Cullen examines the killers’ beliefs and psychological states of mind. Chilling journal entries show a progression from adolescent angst to psychopathic rage as they planned a multistage killing spree that included bombs that ultimately didn’t detonate. Cullen goes beyond detailing the planning and execution of the shootings, delving into the early lives of the killers as well. He explores the aftermath for the town of Littleton, Colorado: survivors’ stories, investigation into how the sheriff’s department mishandled the crisis, several ongoing legal issues, exploitation of the shooting by some religious groups and sensationalists, and the school’s battle to regain its identity. Cullen debunks several Columbine myths, including the goth angle and a martyrdom story of a girl who proclaimed her belief in God before she was killed. Graphic and emotionally vivid; spectacularly researched and analyzed. --Vanessa Bush

I'd recommend Columbine: A True Crime Story by Jeff Kass
By 12345
This book is filled with errors, from Eric Harris being a ladies man (based on a false statement that was later taken back) to claiming they weren't bullied even though their friends and journals prove otherwise. He also describes Dylan Klebold as a borderline innocent accomplice even though he is the first one to write about murdering a large amount of people. I'd recommend Columbine: A True Crime Story by Jeff Kass, No Easy Answers by Dylan Klebold's longtime friend Brooks Brown or Comprehending Columbine by Ralph W Larkin.

Dave Cullen: Myth Buster
By California Dreaming
I read a lot of true crime, but usually, I prefer books about serial killers. After all, as John Douglas has opined, quite a bit is actually known about serial killers, as many of them that are captured come out alive, and many of those are willing to talk. In comparison, it is not uncommon for mass murderers (MMs) and spree killers to "go out in flames," and so it is difficult to interview these types after their crimes. After all, dead men tell no tales.

Well, this is usually the case, but not exactly so here. "Luckily" -- if this is the correct word -- in this case, both of the killers kept diaries and video evidence that was recovered after the massacre. So in comparison with other MMs, quite a bit is known about Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold, the perpetrators of the violence. Recently, I watched a documentary entitled "The Columbine Massacre: Inside the Killer's Mind" (which should have been "killers'" instead perhaps, since there were two of them), and I actually liked it more than most reviewers on this site. Many people complained about the accent of the narrator, which I found to be a little bit silly; after all, I don't believe he is American so you would expect an accent. But if you watch that documentary, you will learn quite a bit about the killers, mostly from interviews with acquaintances of the killers and "found footage."

And of course, you'll learn even more if you read "Columbine," and I highly recommend that you do. Oddly, I laughed in quite a few places, as the author -- Dave Cullen -- smartly uses the killers' own words against them at different points in the book, in a satirical kind of way. I think that this really works. Furthermore, Mr. Cullen wisely chose against a strictly linear narrative; this book would've been incredibly boring if it were told in a sequential format. Instead, we bounce back and forth between timeframes, and characters, and it keeps the book interesting and fresh. (Usually, I prefer mostly a linear narrative, but it just wouldn't have worked in this case.) Also, Mr. Cullen, even though I believe that he has worked as a journalist in a "past life," is not afraid to rip on journalists in general and their "craft," as it seems that he believes many of them do more harm than good. Finally, instead of taking the easy way out, Mr. Cullen is not afraid to attack many of the myths of Columbine and show that many of those myths are just plain wrong. Let's just call him a "Myth Buster."

Well, after finishing "Columbine," I returned to my favorite crime sub-genre and am currently reading "Hunting a Psychopath: The East Area Rapist / Original Night Stalker Investigation - The Original Investigator Speaks Out" which is probably an overly-lengthy title. But I decided to read that because I not only wanted to read another serial killer book, but the FBI is giving another push to solve that case as I write -- they just released information in hopes that someone's memory might be jogged. It is interesting, however, that the EAR/ONS has never been caught, so we still don't know much more about him that most MMs. But if you're into true crime, and you're looking to take a little break from serial killers, I'll go with a pretty strong recommendation on "Columbine."

Groundbreaking
By Amazon Customer
Incredibly thorough investigation of the Columbine High School massacre and factors surrounding it on all sides. Dave Cullen does a phenomenal job at deconstructing the inaccurate narrative that most of us still hold about the event, and provides a platform for the victims' stories to be heard as well. We need critical, thoughtful explorations like this book if we are to truly learn from horrific events like Columbine.

Small planet, big influence
By Joanna Daneman
This is an amazing book. It has lasted longer on the shelves than many other books of its kind and packs an influential punch.
The secret of "Diet for a Small Planet" is that it contains something for everyone, whether you believe in vegetarianism, the ecological production of the food supply or just want better health.
If you are an animal activist or don't eat meat for religious reasons, Lappe provides valuable info on how to get the proper balance in your diet by matching foods to get all the essential amino acids you need (the building blocks of proteins.)
If you are interested in health, you can use Lappe's book to provide alternative main dishes that are satisfying and lower in fat, higher in fiber. Meat is a major source of saturated fats, beans and rice and other grains provide lots of benefits such as soluable and insoluable fiber, vitamins and minerals.
If you are ecologically minded, and this is the thrust of the book, you can eat comfortably, knowing your dietary items take up less resources to grow.
I don't subscribe to all Lappe's philosophies, yet, this book had and continues to have a major influence on me. Rice and beans or grains and beans are regular items on our table, meatless days outnumber days when meat is on the table, and this is because I read Lappe's book long ago. I am sure I am better for knowing the information here.

even with 'protein complementarity' refuted, a source for simple, affordable ethnic recipes based on legumes & grains
By Jeffrey L. Blackwell
Like so many applied chemistry students in the 1970s, Diet for a Small Planet was among the books that made chemistry 'alive'. It brought our classroom abstractions to the kitchen table. Lappe's writing is persuasive and readable and her recipes are simple and affordable enough for a student's skill & budget.

Much of the controversy of this book arose regarding its 2 main points.
1) When proteins are assimilated or metabolized as a 'complete protein' containing all amino acids in proper proportions, there is a high 'protein utilization' by enzymes / human digestive system. (see note, this was researched and refuted in 1981)
2) The 'food chain' pyramid of feed grains to animal meat has about a 10% net protein efficiency. That is, you get 10 times more protein eating corn & beans vs. eating beef or red meat protein.

Lappe's contention that we could feed many of the world's malnourished if we in rich nations were vegetarians or used meats as seasoning rather than entrees may be a scientific & nutritional ideal. The bad news is that it is as difficult to change traditional patterns of food consumption as it is to change religion or culture. The good news is 'protein complementarity or not', combos of legumes and grains have for centuries been the traditional pattern of food comsumption by the poor in most of Latin America & Asia. whether eaten as a meal or not, the 'survival value' of these protein-rich combos made them the 'fittest' for the environment so they became traditions.

For similar food chem books, try Harold McGee or especially Shirley Corriher's classic 'Cookwise'.

Note from Wikipedia:
'In fact, the original source of the theory, Frances Moore Lappé, changed her position on protein combining. In the 1981 edition of Diet for a Small Planet, she wrote:

"In 1971 I stressed protein complementarity because I assumed that the only way to get enough protein ... was to create a protein as usable by the body as animal protein. In combating the myth that meat is the only way to get high-quality protein, I reinforced another myth. I gave the impression that in order to get enough protein without meat, considerable care was needed in choosing foods. Actually, it is much easier than I thought.
"With three important exceptions, there is little danger of protein deficiency in a plant food diet. The exceptions are diets very heavily dependent on
[1] fruit
[2] some tubers, such as sweet potatoes or cassava,
[3] junk food (refined flours, sugars, and fat).
Fortunately, relatively few people in the world try to survive on diets in which these foods are virtually the sole source of calories.

In all other diets, if people are getting enough calories, they are virtually certain of getting enough protein."[8]

On the other hand, the principle of protein combining seems to have been unknowingly recognized by most traditional agricultural societies in the form of dishes that combine legumes with grains. Examples include the traditional Indian combination of dal and rice, the Middle Eastern pairing of pita bread with hummus, ful medames, or falafel, the West African combination of rice and beans (since spread in a circum-Caribbean distribution to the Caribbean islands, Brazil and elsewhere in Latin America, and to the Southern United States where it is known as Hoppin' John), and the Mexican tradition of combining beans with tortillas and other dishes made of maize.'

Wonder where I've been that I missed this book till now!!??
By B. Smawley
Oh gosh what can one say about a book that is so insightful and factually sound? I commend Ms. Lappe for pulling together all the data contained in this book. She does not preach nor try to change anyone's mind. The info contained in the book reminded me of that old line "just the facts please." I believe she focused on protein because it is "lack of protein if we don't eat meat" (not vitamins, minerals, iron, etc.) that scare people about giving up meat. Ms. Lappe includes charts and facts and figures -- all kinds of information -- to reassure the reader that plant eaters can in fact get adequate protein from veggies -- minus the artery-clogging fat. Certainly, one gets plenty of vitamins and other nutients from plant/grain foods. Perhaps we bring our personal baggage along when reading such a book. I believe it is wasteful to feed grain to animals when people worldwide are starving and I doubt the earth can continue to support such wastefulness. So I welcome books such as this. Each person should think over the issues then decide. If one decides to stop eating meat or to cut back on the amount eaten, this book is loaded with information to help with food combining in the plant/grain families to make sure one will get the necessary nutrients. The recipes are included to help us along, and I will be referring to them and this book often in the coming weeks (or months!) Ms. Lappe's philosophy gets 5 stars too. I highly recommend this book.
