A favorite Second Year Algebra textbook

Paul Foerster wrote the best 2nd year algebra textbook I have ever examined or taught from. As a trained physicist and mathematician with an unusual and delightful sense of humor, Foerster develops the algebra by developing and illustrating the algebra skills in the context of functions. His applications are real-world, meaty and meaningful. It's a five-star tome for me.

Want strong Math work from this textbook

My son's math teacher uses this textbook as he believes it is a better choice to inspire young minds to math. I have to agree, mainly because he teaches Math as an art the should be appreciated and discussed in fun, challenging, and inspired ways. Most mostly because my son is actively engaged and seems to struggle less when concepts and formulas are presented in readable, simple and straight forward ways!!
Have purchase so another child will be toward math as fun, simple and something to share. It is sooo much more then just memorizing"

Sheridan, best known as Jerry Seinfeld's TV mother, reveals her love affair with James Dean in a brief book replete with moony dialogue, prescient remarks about Dean's driving habits and a 1950s New York setting. The effervescent Sheridan, known as Dizzy, was a dancer living in a theater district residence hall for aspiring actresses when she met the 21-year-old Dean, an Indiana farm boy who had come to New York via Hollywood. Their instant attraction was soon consummated. Sheridan portrays Dean as a sometimes corny romantic, who immediately began talking about being "together forever" and who needed "always to touch and be touched." While Dizzy managed to work, dancing in nightclubs all over New York or in summer stock musicals, Jimmy was either more unlucky or more choosy, and brooded over his disappointments. Though she touches on Dean's moody episodes and regular, unexplained disappearances, as well as his disclosure of a homosexual liaison with a California producer helpful to his career, Sheridan doesn't claim that her memoir is a complete account of Dean's New York years. (For example, there's no mention of his acceptance into the Actors Studio in November 1951.) When Dean was cast in a bound-for-Broadway production, he moved easily away from Sheridan. Dean got enthusiastic notices in See the Jaguar, although the play closed in a few days, and the affair never rekindled. Sheridan's feelings for Dean, her pain upon their separation and on his untimely death a few years later, are sweetly rendered and seem genuine, although the details are filtered though a romanticized lens. Two love stories. One funny and sweet. One curious but poignant. Both authors linked by a coincidence: they were both characters on the TV sitcom Seinfeld. Before Stiller played George Costanza's father on Seinfeld, he was one half of the comedy team Stiller and Meara, a successful collaboration, in part because Anne Meara was his wife. This is not only the story of Stiller's rise from poverty to become a successful actor and comedian but also the story of a "showbiz" marriage, the unlikely pairing of a Jewish boy and an Irish girl who struggled to stay together for over 30 years. It's a very straightforward memoir with lots of insider, "showbizzy" anecdotes.

Sheridan (Jerry's mom on Seinfeld ) once costarred in a real-life love story with perennial pop-cultural tragic hero James Dean. She gives us a "sweet and funny" saga that other writers have assayed but misplayed, she says. Once engaged to Dean, she ought to know: "after Jimmy was killed only one person was left in the world who knew what happened between us. Me." She is the Dizzy in the title, by the way, and she met Dean when both were aspiring actors in the early '50s. They began to exchange non sequiturs spontaneously in the parlor of a dormitory. He was attracted to her wit and her nickname, and so their relationship began. As far as Dean biographies go, Sheridan's is notably gentle and lacking in either self-promotion or salaciousness. A memoir of the icon as a young actor, it makes an interesting addition to the Dean literature. Mike Tribby

I watched this book being written from afar through Liz's sister. After so many years we thought it would never be finished. when it was it was finished we were astonished. When we got our copy...we were blown away. Wonderful Liz. You are even better a writer than you are an actor!

A Sweet, Sweet Tear Jerker

Who knew Liz Sheridan, besides being a terrific actress, was such a fine writer. I thought this might be a humdrum celeb bio ... but in fact it is an absorbing and utterly touching story of young love. You know the tragic ending is coming, of course, but it makes you cry anyhow.

Anyone can read and appreciate this fine book ... but it's an added bonus if you are my age and remember the 1950s New York City Ms. Sheridan recreates.

Forget about a title

Dizzy & Jimmy is a simple, sweet story of falling in love, though never easy or that simple. Dizzy Sheridan makes James Dean real, almost touchable unlike the idol the media has created over the past 60 years. It's a book you start and don't put down 'til you're finished. After reading, I want to sit down with Dizzy and have a cup of coffee with her while she shares some of her life experiences beyond that of falling in love with The Little Prince. That's probably just the actor in me wanting more.

What comes after one?

"The number sense is not confined to the human race." This is the first sentence in "Realm of Numbers," written by Isaac Asimov.

He goes on to explain that animals can recognize the differences in numbers (I think as a kind of encouragement to those humans who have problems dealing with numbers and mathematics or are clearly math phobes like me.)

Even a math phobe is able to recognize patterns of numbers on the faces of playing cards. As another example of pattern recognition, he gives the situation of Mr. Caveman peering into the cave to check on his two children. However, as the pattern increases, he needs some way to communicate this and so creates names for numbers.

Mr. Caveman has a rack of stone axes--four to be exact, but the pattern shows one is missing. He goes to his neighbor and asks if he borrowed one. Just this simple mathematical problem shows us the necessity of naming numbers.

Now Mr. Caveman must move beyond counting on his fingers to creating and using an abacus. However, Mr. Caveman has Dr. Isaac Asimov to explain the maneuvers to him.

In the 1950's this book must have been a best seller because my copy is from the 8th printing. Wow!

Honestly, anyone who opens this book to get some help will enter the "Realm of Numbers" where "a clear, imaginative approach to mathematics" can be as easy as 1-2-3. If anything is unclear in this review, blame it on math, not the reviewer.

Note: Any biographical sketch about Dr. Asimov will state that he was a prolific writer who wrote in nine of the ten Dewey Decimal categories. This is my third Asimov review. The first book belonged to the world of science (Dewey 500s) in that it was a book of science terms. The second book is about the meanings of map names and places and their etymologies (Dewey 400s or 900s). This book is about making the use of numbers easier--another 500s category.

Great math book for laymen

If you like math but are not a mathematician, you will most likely enjoy this book as I did. In numerous essays, Asimov has mentioned that while he loved math, his abilities in mathematics were modest, not equal to his mastery of the sciences. But he wanted to write engagingly on math just as he wrote engagingly on chemistry, biology, and physics, and he succeeded. How? By not going above his head but treating more elementary math topics in a novel, entertaining, and clear way. I loved this book. My younger son, a math minor in college, would find it too elementary and unchallenging.

The biggest entry in the Routledge Language Family Series

THE INDO-ARYAN LANGUAGES, edited by George Cardona and Dhanesh Jain, is a typical installment of the Routledge Language Family Services, which seeks to give brief but insightful descriptions of as many languages in a family as possible. With this volume, Routledge has certainly outdone themselves, giving us over a thousand pages of linguistic goodness.

The first three chapters cover the language family in general. These are the General Introduction, "Sociolinguistics of the Indo-Aryan Languages" and "Writing Systems of the Indo-Aryan Languages". I am generally satisfied with the General Introduction's presentation of the debate over the Indo-European Urheimat and the influence from the substrate. However, I think it would have been better if George Cardona and Dhanesh Jain had laid out the devout Hindu line on this branch of linguistics, for they see Sanskrit as a perfect language of divine origin and the real parent of the Indo-European family, and they claim that Indo-European linguistics is a racist or colonialist science. That would better prepare readers for the nutjobs that discussions of these languages in public fora inevitably attract. Then there are three chapters on Middle Indo-Aryan. One covers Sanskrit, the second Asokan Prakrit and Pali, and the third Prakrits and Apabhramsa. The bulk of the book is dedicated to single-chapter descriptions of modern languages: Hindu, Urdu, Bangla, Asamiya, Oriya, Maithili, Magahi, Bhojpuri, Nepali, Panjabi, Sindhi, Gujarati, Marathi, Konkani, Sinhala, Dardic, and Kashmiri.

While I have training in Indo-European linguistics, my academic knowledge of this particularly family stops with Sanskrit, so I cannot give it much of a critical review. But for linguaphiles, this is sure to be an entertaining read and an exhaustive source of information.

Quite a detailed survey on Indo-Aryan.

This is a detailed survey, giving an overview of the phonology and grammar of most major Indo-Aryan languages. Though there is generally too little information on the history of the languages, like the sound changes or grammar changes. Likewise most chapters have no information about the dialects of the languages, beyond listing the dialects and sometimes saying what dialect is similar to what. There is unfortunately no chapter on the Dhivehi language, even though it is the official language of the Maldives, so it is an important language. Likewise the chapter on the various scripts of the Indo-Aryan languages has no mention of the Dhivehi script, which is a fascinating script, with both Arabic numerals and ancient numerals being adapted for use as consonants. There is also no chapter on the important Romany language (or it could be more accurately described as the Romany group of languages). In fact, Romany is hardly mentioned at all. There are two examples of Romany (spelled Romani by the author) in the chapter on Prakrits, saying that devoicing of murmured (meaning voiced aspirated) stops, like in the Paisaci Prakrit, occurred only in Romani and Dardic. Both examples are in Romani, and personally, as far as Dardic, I am aware of devoicing only in northern Kalasha. Other Dardic languages have either retained the voiced aspirates, or else have deaspirated them, sometimes resulting in a tone distinction. And even in Northern Kalasha, the devoicing is not general but sporadic, unlike Paisaci. The grammars of the various languages do not mention under what circumstances are subject pronouns not used, which is something I would want to know more about, as there are differences among the languages on where the pronouns are omitted.
But beyond these faults, the book is in general very informative and useful.

A Must Have for Every Spirit-Led Library

Kathryn Kuhlman, who always credited these wonderful miracles to the Holy Spirit, was not only an instrument of God's healing love, but she was also a wonderful teacher about God's way of life and His power. The book is filled with testimonies of many who were not only physically restored to health but who entered into a relationship with God for the first time by being spiritually reborn.

The healings came about in different ways: through a 6 year old child who prayed for her family to become whole and her parents to let go of the alcohol that ruined their family, through loving, believing family members who prayed for God to restore their loved one to health, and through Ms. Kuhlman herself being the Holy Spirit's agent of both leading the lost to God and physically restoring sick and damaged bodies.

I Believe in Miracles b/c of Kuhlman; I saw them.

Re: I believe in miracles. I attended Kathryn Kuhlman's services, and I am sure I witnessed miracles taking place. I talked to one of her workers who verified that she met people who had been healed in past services and their cases were genuine. And the ones I saw dancing around in front of 2000 people screaming "I am healed" and openly weeping with joy, surely looked "healed" to me.

I have never met another "faith healer" with the following or the number of claims of healings that Kuhlman had. I am always amazed at people who "check up" on the personal lives of such people and discount their whole ministry or life of "good deeds" and "dismiss" them with a wave because they did not lead an "impeccable life" themselves.

Because of the judgment of others, those who must meet a higher standard than the rest of us are "forced" to "lie" if they are to have a ministry outside of their private lives. People want "saints" of anyone who "works for" God.

God works through human beings. We are all human. Because Kuhlman acted as an "intercessor" or "point of belief" at a moment in time, God worked miracles through that woman. And He is still performing miracles today through the intercession of others, if the ones who are healed are open to the experience. But many prevent themselves from receiving a healing because of judgment of themselves or others.

A Testimony to Miracles of the Holy Spirit

Kathryn Kuhlman (1907 - 1976) was an evangelist who held "Miracle" meetings in which she preached the Gospel and people were healed of all sorts of medical condtions. Kuhlman hated the term "faith-healer", and always gave credit to the Holy Spirit for any miracles of healing that occurred in one of her healing crusades.

This book is a case study of about 30 healings. Each story is about 10 pages in length, and each is well documented. Details are given for each miracle healing, how the sickness began, the prognosis, the healing, and the aftermath. Most, if not all of these cases had their healings confirmed by their doctors.

If Miss Kuhlman was a fraud, as many of her critics claim, then this book (and two others that follow), stand in contrast to the critics. The stories stand on the evidence of the healing itself, and the supplementary documentation by medical doctors, family members, and friends. The cases presented are so detailed, they actually invite investigation; therefore, it is inconceivable that Kuhlman would present these stories of healing if there were not in fact true.
