Self-Management and the Crisis of Socialism, by Michael W. Howard

While some conclude from the revolutions of 1989 that socialism is dead, interest in socialism continues because of persisting problems of contemporary capitalism. In this exciting text, Michael W. Howard offers critiques of liberal, communitarian, postmodern and some Marxist perspectives in order to develop a 'left-liberal' defense of a model of self-managed market socialism that includes a basic income for all. Specific applications of his view include analyses of its implications for the global marketplace, the changing nature of workplaces, and media restructuring and ownership. This work is sure to be of interest to social scientists, public policy makers, and economists as well as to feminists, ecologists, and others concerned with how market socialism is relevant to their social issues.

Review
Howard's vision comes with no guarantees. It is precisely because it is grounded in real world examples that it rises above idealistic solutions and false hopes. If we make the road by walking, then this book is a good companion for the trip. (Grassroots Economic Organizing)

If you do not think [the new millennium] is yours, but belongs to transnational corporations, Michael Howard offers fresh hope and a grounded vision to reclaim what is rightfully ours. If you feel like the fist of the present is tightening and your breath is getting shorter, read this challenging book to rekindle your utopian visions and to sharpen your thinking about what is possible. Though Howard's vision comes with no guarantees, it is precisely because it is grounded in real world examples that is rises above idealistic solutions and false hopes. . . . Howard's proposal is just far enough outside the range of current possibilities to be visionary, but not so far removed from current experience as to be utopian. It is compelling to me when anyone dares to reach for this type of middle ground. (Ken Estey, Union Theological Seminary in New York)

Howard carefully reviews the now rich literature in philosophy, politics, and economics about the vast array of ideals and programs for socialism, equality, and freedom for all. The discussion of background philosophical literature will engage the interests of most philosophers, and the discussion of feasibility will engage most social scientists. His work is open enough to raise questions, flexible enough to propose experiments, and concrete enough to promote struggles. In other words, it is practical as well as philosophical. (Canadian Philosophical Association)

Howard . . . offers a comprehensive discussion of the vast literature concerning worker self-management, drawing on a wide range of disciplines including philosophy and economics. . . . His book represents a valuable excursion into an important subject. (CHOICE)

A good source for discussion
By Shayn Mccallum
Michael Howard's cogent attempt to construct a theoretical substructure for "market socialism" provides a good basis for discussion around issues of post-capitalism and what kind of "socialism" remains viable for the twenty-first century. The book is especially valuable for its treatment of the Soviet-type socialist model and the reasons for its failure and also its well-researched presentation of various existing experiments in self-management, worker-ownership etc, with both their successes and shortcomings.
Howard's presentation of market socialism as an attractive and realistic improvement on capitalism is relatively persuasive, however his attempts to defend his model against other self-managed alternatives, notably Michael Albert's "Parecon" are less convincing. Howard merely states his belief that market socialism is a more practical and reasonable alternative to capitalism than the "parecon" but fails to adequately address the arguments directed at market systems by thinkers such as Michael Albert and Robin Hahnel.
One great advantage of Howard's book is its readibility and clarity. It is certainly a valuable contribution to socialist theory and there is much to admire in it. In contrast however, my personal opinion remains that the best proposal for a self-managing economy currently under discussion remains the Parecon model. As a companion to this work, I heartily recommend Michael Albert's "Parecon" for readers interested in exploring the potential pitfalls and weaknesses of the ideas contained in Howard's book.

Review THIS, Amazon
By David Kendall
Amazon sent me an email asking if I'd like to submit a review for this product. But this presents a problem, since Amazon never shipped it. I would actually love read Michael Howard's book and provide a review. I'd much prefer this to getting my money back because I was really interested in reading this book. But I can't seem to get either the book or a refund out of Amazon. So this "review" is about Amazon, not Michael Howard's book. Sorry if this seems inappropriate. But Amazon clearly failed to do their job, they've ignored my formal complaint, I've received no compensation or feedback, and I won't be doing any more business with Amazon. I hope this "review" helps other consumers to avoid similar difficulties with Amazon. Thank you for reading.

minimalist, easy, simple, straightforward!
By Angela Rabl
I have bought other bath bomb making books and even though they claim they are easy to use for beginners, they have been nothing but. The list and cost of ingredients in other books has been overwhelming.. This one does the opposite, very simple standard ingredients, easy language... It appears to have been done with a lot of love and caring.. At least that's how I felt when I read and used it...
Thanks for in implicating fun!

SEO is a key growth channel for your business, but the rules of SEO have changed dramatically in recent years.

To grow your business in today’s economy, you need a strong online presence. But what does that entail exactly?

Marketing is no longer about mass-market advertising and outbound sales; it’s about capturing demand — grabbing the attention of people already looking to make a purchase or acquire specific knowledge. To do that, your content needs to be at the top of Internet search results.

Many businesses and marketers toss up a brochure-style website, do a little social media and blog posting (if any), and think they’re "doing SEO" — but that’s not what it takes to get those coveted first page Google rankings.

No longer just another tactic, search engine optimization has become a full-blown channel on par with PR and advertising — one you can’t afford to ignore. From website designers to business owners, marketers to entrepreneurs, everyone can benefit from understanding and applying SEO best practices.

John Jantsch, author of the best-selling Duct Tape Marketing and creator of the Duct Tape Marketing System™, and Phil Singleton, an experienced SEO consultant with years of experience at the local, regional, and national levels, have teamed up to provide you with the only Internet marketing guide you need. In SEO for Growth, they teach you how to leverage the new rules of search engine optimization to make sure your website gets found online. Jantsch and Singleton harness the knowledge they’ve acquired through years of experience and extensive research, explaining SEO in a direct and accessible manner, to help you navigate this complex technical terrain with purpose and ease.

SEO for Growth is Your One-Stop Digital Marketing Guide

The first part of the book provides an in-depth overview of search engines, algorithms, and design changes, so you can understand the way that Google “thinks.” The book then takes you through the mindset and strategy you need to get SEO right and provides specific techniques that you can use at each stage of a new business: from finding the perfect match between the ideal customer and the market message (traction), to retaining customers and building relationships for growth (expansion); and leveraging the assets you build for payoff (conversion).

From this book, you’ll learn how to:

  • create and re-purpose content and plan an editorial calendar
  • use different social media channels to generate engagement with your content
  • build and manage your online reputation, plus handle negative reviews
  • do quality link building without resorting to the shady practices Google now penalizes
  • conduct keyword research to optimize your website and all of your content
  • use pay-per-click advertising in the most cost-efficient way to get the biggest bang for your buck
  • build a revenue generating website that will help power your company’s growth for years to come

Whether you want to adapt your small business to the digital age or you’re a marketer figuring out how to help your clients online, this indispensable guide has everything you need to plan and implement the right SEO strategy for your business.

In the past, I have found it more than difficult to find a resource that puts everything together in a simple, easy-to-read format. I truly feel like this book covers the “inner workings” of SEO, Google and overall business growth.
Prior to purchasing this book, I did quite a bit of research. After all, there are more than a few options out there to choose from, and I wanted to make sure I got the best. This extensive amount of research definitely paid off!
The authors make even the most difficult concepts easy to understand. They touch on basic and advanced tactics so that readers of every level will walk away with new ideas, methods and tactics for growing their business with SEO.
One of the main features I noticed right away that set this book apart from all the others out there was the level of detail present. It is extremely detailed and offers usable tips for SEO, rather than just being filled with big-words and industry jargon. The authors did a great job of tackling difficult topics and narrowing them down to the essentials, all while presenting the information in a conversational and casual style so it is easy to understand.
Another interesting feature that I loved was the many industry experts that were not only highlighted in the book, but that also gave advice and information about the various topics being discussed.
I would highly recommend this book to anyone – business owners, blog owners or anyone else who wants to utilize SEO to grow their business.

Most SEO Books are "All Hat, No Cattle"! John and Phil Knocked It Outta The Park!
By Greg Martin
When I saw the title and John's name attached, I knew this book would be good. Too many books are long on theory and short on actionable advice. That is never the case with John Jantsch. I've not interacted with Phil in the past, but I will be in the future. His insights provide insider information from someone "in the trenches". The combination of these two gentlemen is powerful, indeed.

I bought this on a Friday and made the mistake of letting my team greet the UPS man instead of receiving the shipment myself. As a result, it was nearly a week before I finally got my hands on it. They all read it before I got the chance.

Do yourself a favor. Pick up this book and pay attention to the near continuous stream of content and Podcast wisdom coming from both Phil and John. You'll be glad you did.

By Toni Taylor
While the title highlights SEO, this book is as much about developing a well-rounded marketing strategy as it is about getting better Google rankings for your website. As a web designer myself, I understand what the authors are saying about how websites have evolved from digital brochures to marketing platforms, but also how a lot of the web design industry still treats web design as a creative and development exercise – so there can be a lot of missed opportunity if marketing, SEO and lead generation aren’t included in the process. This book is great for business owners, it gives you a peak under the hood without getting too technical, and it will show you how to get a lot more out of your website. It's a must read!!

Reclaiming History: The Assassination of President John F. Kennedy, by Vincent Bugliosi

For fifty years the truth about the assassination of President John F. Kennedy has been obscured. This book releases us from a crippling distortion of American history.

At 1:00 p.m. on November 22, 1963, President John F. Kennedy was pronounced dead, the victim of a sniper attack during his motorcade through Dallas. That may be the only fact generally agreed upon in the vast literature spawned by the assassination. National polls reveal that an overwhelming majority of Americans (75%) believe that there was a high-level conspiracy behind Lee Harvey Oswald. Many even believe that Oswald was entirely innocent. In this continuously absorbing, powerful, ground-breaking book, Vincent Bugliosi shows how we have come to believe such lies about an event that changed the course of history.

The brilliant prosecutor of Charles Manson and the man who forged an iron-clad case of circumstantial guilt around O. J. Simpson in his best-selling Outrage Bugliosi is perhaps the only man in America capable of writing the definitive book on the Kennedy assassination. This is an achievement that has for years seemed beyond reach. No one imagined that such a book would ever be written: a single volume that once and for all resolves, beyond any reasonable doubt, every lingering question as to what happened in Dallas and who was responsible.

There have been hundreds of books about the assassination, but there has never been a book that covers the entire case, including addressing every piece of evidence and each and every conspiracy theory, and the facts, or alleged facts, on which they are based. In this monumental work, the author has raised scholarship on the assassination to a new and final level, one that far surpasses all other books on the subject. It adds resonance, depth, and closure to the admirable work of the Warren Commission.

Reclaiming History is a narrative compendium of fact, forensic evidence, reexamination of key witnesses, and common sense. Every detail and nuance is accounted for, every conspiracy theory revealed as a fraud on the American public. Bugliosi's irresistible logic, command of the evidence, and ability to draw startling inferences shed fresh light on this American nightmare. At last it all makes sense.

From Publishers Weekly
Bugliosi, best known as Charles Manson's prosecutor, spent more than 20 years writing this defense of the Warren Commission's conclusion that Lee Harvey Oswald acted alone in the slaying of President Kennedy, but his obsession has produced a massive tome that's likely to overwhelm most readers. At times, the author seems determined to present every detail his researches revealed, even if it doesn't add to the overall picture (like a footnote on Elvis sightings). Further, while Bugliosi says even serious conspiracy theorists don't claim the FBI or Secret Service were involved, he devotes chapters to each. The book's structure—it's organized by subject, such as theories about the role of the FBI, the KGB or anti-Castro Cubans—leads to needless repetition, and, for an author who excoriates conspiracy theorists, charging them with carelessness and making wild accusations, Bugliosi is not always temperate in his language; for example, twice he makes the nonsensical claim that some Warren Commission critics "were screaming the word conspiracy before the fatal bullet had come to rest." His decision to devote twice as many pages to critiquing Oliver Stone's movie JFK as to his chapter on organized crime (identified by the chief counsel of the House Select Committee on Assassination as the likely conspirators) is a curious one, as is the choice to open the book with a dramatic re-creation of events surrounding the assassination rather than a straightforward chronology of the relevant facts. Moreover, Bugliosi does not always probe whether individuals who are the sole source for certain facts (for example, Oswald's widow, Marina) had any motive to lie. Bugliosi's voluminous endnotes are on an accompanying CD. Gerald Posner's 1993 Case Closed made most of the same points in a much more concise way. 32 pages of illus. (May)

From The New Yorker
This weighty book (its pages number sixteen hundred and twelve) claims to be the final word on the assassination of President Kennedy. It is as if Bugliosi, who prosecuted the Manson murders, intended to overwhelm with sheer, footnoted bulk. But in the way that others have "proved" conspiracies, Bugliosi "proves" yet again the guilt of Lee Harvey Oswald. He does this by reëxamining familiar evidence but also by dismissing preposterous theories, such as one that J. Edgar Hoover masterminded the murder to keep his job. Bugliosi steps less certainly in considering the work of the House Select Committee on Assassinations, which, in 1978, concluded that J.F.K. was "probably" killed as the result of a plot. Citing a National Research Council study, Bugliosi brushes aside the committee’s acoustic evidence suggesting that four shots were fired in Dallas (a fourth shot would confirm a second gunman); he is uncomfortable with a subsequent analysis, by the British Forensic Science Society, which challenged the N.R.C. opinion. Mysteries are like that"

From Bookmarks Magazine
In Reclaiming History, former Los Angeles prosecutor Vincent Bugliosi (he wrote the best-selling Helter Skelter after putting Charles Manson behind bars) identifies and dismantles the conspiracy theories that still abound in discussions of the Kennedy assassination. At more than 1,600 pages, and accompanied by a CD containing some 1,100 pages of notes, Bugliosi aspires to bludgeon naysayers into submission. Critics, after an obligatory remark on the book's astounding length, generally concede that the author's exhaustive efforts have paid off, making this weighty tome the encyclopedic source for readers interested in reliving the events of November 1963. In the words of J. Michael Parker, though, "How many people are going to pay $50 . . . knowing that [the book] will take them back to the Warren Commission's original conclusion?"

By Gunar Zagars
The ultimate JFK murder book. It is HUGE and probably too much for most readers but the research is outstanding and the writing quite good. Any lingering ideas of a conspiracy in this assassination are completely dispelled. Nevertheless, I still recommend Posner's book (Case Closed) as the best for a beginner - it is much shorter and perhaps a little more lively in style. Both books reach the same conclusion: Oswald was a lone assassin.

The "bible" of the Kennedy Assassination. Fascinating arguments and thorough investigation of the events leading up to and after November 22, 1963. Covers and debunks all the conspiracy nonsense. 1600 pages .....Extensive and Entertaining. Biases are explained. Leaves NO ROOM for silly scenarios that have no grounds. Once and for all time.....John F Kennedy was murdered by a crazed, delusional, self-important nobody; a LONE GUNMAN. Vincent Bugliosi, thank you for leaving us with this masterpiece before you left us. The abridged Audio CD is a good listen also.

The Peel Sessions: A story of teenage dreams and one man's love of new music, by Ken Garner

This is a story of teenage dreams, which, as any Peel fan knows, are hard to beat. Between 1967 and 2004 John Peel picked over 2000 bands to come and record over 4000 sessions to be played on his radio show. Many were young and had never been in a recording studio before, for some it was the start of an illustrious career, for others it was the only recognition their musical talent ever got.

For over 35 years the cream of British musical talent made the journey to the BBC's studio in Maida Vale, from Pink Floyd to Pulp, the Small Faces to the Smiths. And because John Peel was so respected his sessions took on a legendary status - they were a rite of passage that every new band wanted to go through.

Unfettered by commerical pressure the Peel Sessions were a unique British institution - an archive of music that reflects one man's passion for finding and encouraging new music.

Includes a full sessionography listing songs, band members and broadcast dates.

Jarvis Cocker writing about his first Peel Session aged 18 (Wayne the drummer was 15):

'We travelled down to Maida Vale in a van driven by a very strange man we'd contacted via a card pinned to the Virgin record shop noticeboard. We'd had to borrow lots of equipment from a band called The Naughtiest Girl Was a Monitor 'cause we didn't have enough stuff of our own. The session was to be produced by Dale Griffin, who used to be the drummer in Mott the Hoople; I seem to remember that he was wearing cowboy boots.

I think the crisis point came when Wayne was attempting to get a home-made synth-drum to work that a friend of his at school had made out of a rubber burglar-alarm mat and an old electronic calculator - Dale Griffin looked at this 15-year-old kid crouching on the floor bashing what looked like a doormat with some wires coming out of it and just put his head in his hands. But to his credit, the session did get finished and after it, everything else started for me...'

The definitve biography of the greatest DJ who ever lived and the awesome show he created.
By John Tebbutt
This book is the definitive guide to John Peel's career at the BBC as well as being a decent history of popular music in Great Britain from 1967-2004. It describes the history of the live session and the role of "needle time" in its development. The characters at the BBC are brilliantly brought to life - their motivations for pushing Peel around the schedule, trying to eliminate the show, etc. And how Peel survived it all to become universally acknowledged as the best DJ in rock history. And it's a damned good read!
That's the first part. The second part is page after page of data on each and every show, who played, where it was broadcast from, you name it. In truth, I've only skimmed the second part so I can't give a detailed account.

The Kitchen House: A Novel, by Kathleen Grissom

Kathleen Grissom, New York Times bestselling author of the highly anticipated Glory Over Everything, established herself as a remarkable new talent with The Kitchen House, now a contemporary classic. In this gripping novel, a dark secret threatens to expose the best and worst in everyone tied to the estate at a thriving plantation in Virginia in the decades before the Civil War.

Orphaned during her passage from Ireland, young, white Lavinia arrives on the steps of the kitchen house and is placed, as an indentured servant, under the care of Belle, the master’s illegitimate slave daughter. Lavinia learns to cook, clean, and serve food, while guided by the quiet strength and love of her new family.

In time, Lavinia is accepted into the world of the big house, caring for the master’s opium-addicted wife and befriending his dangerous yet protective son. She attempts to straddle the worlds of the kitchen and big house, but her skin color will forever set her apart from Belle and the other slaves.

Through the unique eyes of Lavinia and Belle, Grissom’s debut novel unfolds in a heartbreaking and ultimately hopeful story of class, race, dignity, deep-buried secrets, and familial bonds.

When a white servant girl violates the order of plantation society, she unleashes a tragedy that exposes the worst and best in the people she has come to call her family.

Orphaned while onboard ship from Ireland, seven-year-old Lavinia arrives on the steps of a tobacco plantation where she is to live and work with the slaves of the kitchen house. Under the care of Belle, the master's illegitimate daughter, Lavinia becomes deeply bonded to her adopted family, though she is set apart from them by her white skin.

Eventually, Lavinia is accepted into the world of the big house, where the master is absent and the mistress battles opium addiction. Lavinia finds herself perilously straddling two very different worlds. When she is forced to make a choice, loyalties are brought into question, dangerous truths are laid bare, and lives are put at risk.

The Kitchen House is a tragic story of page-turning suspense, exploring the meaning of family, where love and loyalty prevail.

A: When I first began my research I was astonished to discover the great numbers of Irish that were brought over as indentured servants. Then, when I saw advertisements for runaway Irish indentured servants, I realized that some of them, too, must have suffered under intolerable conditions.

Q: Why did you chose not to go into detail about some of the most dramatic plot points in the novel, for example, the death of Waters or the abuse of young Marshall?

A: For the most part, Lavinia and Belle dictated the story to me. From the beginning, it became quite clear that if I tried to embellish or change their story, their narration would stop. When I withdrew, the story would continue. Their voices were quite distinct. Belle, who always felt grounded to me, certainly did not hold back with description, particularly of the rape. Lavinia, on the other hand, felt less stable, less able to cope; and at times it felt as though she was scarcely able to relate her horror.

Q: It is interesting that your novel has two narrators--Lavinia and Belle. Do you have any plans to continue the story into the next generation--perhaps from the perspectives of Jaime and Elly?

A: In 1830, Jamie is a well-respected ornithologist in Philadelphia and Sukey is enslaved by the Cherokee Indians in North Carolina. Theirs are the two voices I hear. In time I will know if I am meant to tell their story. Presently I am writing Crow Mary, another work of historical fiction. A few years ago I was visiting Fort Walsh in the Cypress Hills of Saskatchewan. As I listened to an interpreter tell of Mary, who, in 1872, at the age of sixteen, was traded in marriage to a well-known fur trader, a familiar deep chill went thorough me. I knew then that I would return to write about this Crow woman. Some of her complex life is documented, and what fascinates me are her acts of bravery, equal, in my estimation, to those of Mama Mae.

Q: This is your first novel after diverse careers in retail, agriculture, and the arts. How have each of these experiences contributed to your writing style?

A: I don't know that any endeavor specifically contributed to my writing style, but I do know that every phase of my life helped prepare me to write this book.

Q: The dialogue of the slaves in this novel is very believable. It must have been a difficult thing to achieve. How did you go about creating authentic voices from two hundred years ago?

A: At the very beginning of my research I read two books of slave narratives: Bullwhip Days: The Slaves Remember and Weevils in the Wheat: Interviews with Virginia Ex-Slaves. Soon after, the voices from The Kitchen House began to come to me. My original draft included such heavy dialect that it made the story very difficult to read. In time I modified the style so the story could be more easily read.

Q: You said you wrote the prologue in one sitting after being inspired by a map you found while renovating an old plantation tavern. Since this is your first novel, do you think you were "guided" by residents of the past?

A: Not only do I feel I was guided but also that I was gifted with their trust. However, I am not alone in this. In Alice Walker's book The Color Purple, she writes: "I thank everybody in this book for coming. A.W., author and medium." Unless I misread that, I'd say, in this experience, I'm in good company.

Q: Your book has been described as "Gone with the Wind turned upside down." Are you a fan of Margaret Mitchell's novel? Which writers have inspired you through the years?

A: I have only recently read Gone with the Wind. Although I did enjoy it, a few of the writers that have truly inspired me are Robert Morgan, Alice Randall, Susan Fromberg Schaeffer, Edward P. Jones, Nuala O'Faolain, Alexandra Fuller, Susan Howatch, Rick Bragg, Breena Clarke, Beryl Markham, Alice Walker, Joan Didion . . . this list could go on forever. I love to read.

Q: There are many characters in this novel. How did you go about choosing their names?

A: They were all taken from different lists of slaves that I found in my research.

Q: What advice do you have for writers working on their first novels?

A: If you feel called to write a book, consider it a gift. Look around you. What assistance is the universe offering you as support? I was given an amazing mentor, a poet, Eleanor Drewry Dolan, who taught me the importance of every word. To my utter amazement, there were times she found it necessary to consult three dictionaries to evaluate one word! Take the time you need to learn the craft. Then sit down and write. When you hand over your completed manuscript to a trusted reader, keep an open mind. Edit, edit, and edit again. And, of course, never give up! Q: At times in the novel, you can almost smell the hearty foods being prepared by Mama and others. In your research, did you find any specific notes or recipes from kitchen houses that you can share with your readers?

A: In 1737, William Byrd, founder of Richmond, wrote of the many types of fruits and vegetables available in Virginia. Watermelons, pumpkins, squashes, cucumbers, artichokes, asparagus, green beans, and cauliflower were all being cultivated. I discovered that many of these were preserved by pickling. For those interested in how this was done and for recipes from that time, an excellent resource is Martha Washington's Booke of Cookery and Booke of Sweetmeats, transcribed by Karen Hess.
While in Williamsburg, I watched re enactors roast beef over a spit in a kitchen fireplace. Small potatoes in a pan beneath the meat were browning in the drippings, and I cannot tell you how I longed for a taste. That was my inspiration for the Christmas meal. For basics, such as the chicken soup, I built a recipe around what I knew would have been available for use in the kitchen house at that time.
Whenever Belle baked a molasses cake, I craved a taste. I did try several old recipes that I found, but I was unsatisfied with the results. So, using the old recipes as a baseline, my daughter, Erin, and I created our own version of a simple yet moist and tasty molasses cake. I am happy to share it with the readers:

Simple Molasses Cake
½ cup butter
1/3 cup packed brown sugar
1 egg
½ cup milk
1 cup molasses
2 cups flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon ground ginger
1 teaspoon cinnamon
2 dashes ground cloves
¼ teaspoon salt

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Grease an 8-inchsquare baking pan. In a large bowl, cream the butter and sugar. Beat in the egg. In a separate bowl, combine the milk and the molasses. In another bowl, combine the flour, baking soda, ginger, cinnamon, cloves, and salt. Add each of these alternately to the butter mixture, beating well between additions. Spoon batter into the prepared pan. Bake for approximately 45 minutes, or until a toothpick comes out clean.

From Publishers Weekly
Grissom's unsentimental debut twists the conventions of the antebellum novel just enough to give readers an involving new perspective on what would otherwise be fairly stock material. Lavinia, an orphaned seven-year-old white indentured servant, arrives in 1791 to work in the kitchen house at Tall Oaks, a Tidewater, Va., tobacco plantation owned by Capt. James Pyke. Belle, the captain's illegitimate half-white daughter who runs the kitchen house, shares narration duties, and the two distinctly different voices chronicle a troublesome 20 years: Lavinia becomes close to the slaves working the kitchen house, but she can't fully fit in because of her race. At 17, she marries Marshall, the captain's brutish son turned inept plantation master, and as Lavinia ingratiates herself into the family and the big house, racial tensions boil over into lynching, rape, arson, and murder. The plantation's social order's emphasis on violence, love, power, and corruption provides a trove of tension and grit, while the many nefarious doings will keep readers hooked to the twisted, yet hopeful, conclusion. "The Kitchen House", a Noteworthy New Novel
By D. Eckert
"The Kitchen House"

After reading "The Kitchen House" I believe that Kathleen Grissom has crafted an absorbing historical tale that probes the darkest edges in this villainous period of American history by employing an extraordinary and distinctive approach. The author cleverly created two contrasting protagonists, Lavinia, the white girl-to-woman, and Belle, the mixed race slave, to move the story alternately from their separate perspectives; Ms. Grissom guides the reader into the deepest reaches of the soul of each character in the book. For me, at least, this memorable cast of characters, from the good ones to the downright evil ones seems to have established permanent residence in my thoughts. While I agree with M. Jacobsen's comment that Belle's chapters could have been longer (I really loved Belle), I don't believe her role to be less significant than Lavinia's. Lavinia, as a white person observes and shares the slave experience from within. This approach is unique, I think. At least, I don't recall encountering the technique in literature, and I found it extremely compelling.

The actual historical events of the period are less prominent than the actions, emotions and motivations of the people who live on either side of the implied, but not to be violated, boundary between the races. I think that the complicated relationships between Lavinia and Belle, Mama, and many of the other characters, allow the reader to discover tiny, but significant, cracks in this boundary through which the plot races along from crisis to crisis and then to the shocking, yet fitting conclusion.

Ms. Grissom obviously conducted exhaustive research into the time period of the book. As a born Canadian, she must be commended. In the book she succeeded in describing the customs, mores and artifacts of this period in a clear and entertaining way. Often, when reading a novel, I tend to skip over descriptive passages so as not to interrupt plot progression and character development. In "The Kitchen House" I found the descriptions and details charming and sometimes melancholy. Who can forget, now, what a vasculum is, or forget the image of little slave children pulling the cords of the ceiling fans in the dining rooms to cool their masters on stifling summer days?

I enjoyed reading this book so much that I bought several extra copies to share a very inspiring and special reading experience with special people. So, Ms. Grissom - will we be finding out what happens to the "Kitchen House" characters in the next generation? Kathleen Grissom's powerful first novel leaves me eagerly awaiting the next, whether or not it is a sequel or a totally new historical novel from a totally different perspective.

A review.
By Olivia
At 17, I realize that I'm not the greatest authority on literary merit. My life has been short, relatively unlived, inexperienced. I spend most of my time living through the lives of fictional people on someone else's pages and I feel the uneven weight of the book in my hands. I read The Kitchen House and couldn't feel a thing that wasn't being felt by Belle and Lavinia. I saw only them, their world. And when it was all over, I felt that I might cry because the last page had turned but suddenly, it seemed like the room wasn't empty.
As I read, all of them- Belle, Ben, Marshall even- had peeled their backs off the words to hover around me. And they haunted me for days, followed me everywhere. This novel is the kind that pulls in one as one person before spitting you back out wholly other. Maybe it's the raw, unabashed emotion, the unhindered heartache that claws into you, snags on that darkest part of you and intensifies it. Makes you regret your sins and rejoice in your loves. Either way, I felt what I've rarely felt- that my short life may have been slightly changed by The Kitchen House- or, really, the lives of those inside of it. That I had moved one inch, however miniscule, closer to that part of my bloodline, my heritage, which had remained so almost dreamlike in its distance, untouchable.
Belle could be anyone's ancestor, Lavinia could be anyone's history.
Yeah, that's it. I felt, I think, for the first time, really connected to a past I had only ever read about in text books. In 2 days, this novel revealed more than 12 years of U.S. History. And made it real, true, beautifully horrible in every ghostly- or ghastly- way.
There really aren't words, though I've used a considerable amount, to describe the swell of emotions you feel while reading this. But I suppose that's where the beauty lies. In the ability of words on white pages to create from their inhumanity that rawest spectrum of feelings which mark us as truly human.

Intriguing story, but it had some rough spots
By Tina Hayes
I had a hard time deciding exactly how to rate this one, and I'll explain why. "The Kitchen House" by Kathleen Grissom is a novel I was sure I'd love when I read the blurb. I'm a history buff, particularly fond of the South, and an avid reader.

First, the parts I loved. The characters are well-drawn and easy to love or hate, depending on which one we're talking about. Most points are plausible, which shows the author must have done a great deal of research. The plot gave this book a storyline I absolutely enjoyed; as I fell asleep each night during the time I read this, I'd wondered about the characters and what would happen to them.

Now onto the parts I wasn't so fond of. The main problem I had with the prose was that so many large sections were told in a summerized fashion, as opposed to being written in a way that gave the reader more connection with the story, a great example of the wrong side of the 'show vs tell' writers are warned against. Some historical facts were recited in a teacherly manner instead of being better incorporated into the story. There were A LOT of redundant areas where the reader repeated the exact same thing over and over and over, which greatly detracted from the story and made me wonder if word count had been an issue. One example would be when the parentage of a particular person was discussed between different characters in one chapter at least four times using nearly the same wording. There were a few historical points that I think were a bit off, and the accents could have more accurate. For example, the main character Lavinia is straight off the ship from Ireland but there is only one mention of her accent and it never shows through in her dialogue.

I was enthralled with the story, but the prose could have been more polished.
