basic C with numerical methods

If you already know C++ and would like to know C from numerical methods standpoint, get this book. It'd be easy for you to read a whole book within a few weeks. I use this book to learn C to apply these numerical methods toward bioinformatics applications but anyone who wants to learn C from the beginning should also be able to use this book. This book has lots of code examples and a experienced programmer should be able to read those examples and understand what C is like. I'm sure that C is better than Fortran in bioinformatics applications. Cheers!

C for Engineers (typos included)

This is a great programming book on C catered towards engineers. Would be nice if the reader had a background in Calculus as well since the examples listed in the book are heavy on math and calculus problems. This was one of the first programming books assigned to me as an Engineering Major in college. One drawback that keeps me from assigning a 5 Star rating is that the book is riddled with typos that it causes much annoyance. These typos are not dangerous in that it does not lead the reader into misunderstanding nor confusion; but rather, gives the impression that the book was published in haste without proper editing. As one of my first books on C, I would want to cherish and make this book a standard within the C Engineering community - these typos need to go.

I bought this book to look specifically into numerical methods and related 'C' code. As it turned out, some of the examples were drawn from civil and structural engineering but that apart the first half of the book can be used as an introductory C text. Dynamic data structures and preprocessors are clearly defined and explained.There are many examples and explanations are clear and detailed.The book covers with "good-working" C codes the solution of linear/non-linear equations,curve fitting and interploation,numerical differentiation and integration, and solution of ordinary differential equations.It ends with probablility, random walk problems and Monte Carlo techniques. Overall a good solid book that can be used any level of user.

About the Author
American author Stephen Crane began writing early in life, and was already a published author by the age of sixteen. Among Crane s best known works are Maggie: A Girl of the Streets, which is considered to be the first literary work in the early American tradition of Naturalism, a literary movement marked by detailed realism and the acknowledgement of social conditions of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, and The Red Badge of Courage, which was influenced by his own experiences in military school and personal contact with Civil-War veterans. Crane died in 1900 at the age twenty-eight of tuberculosis, but had a significant and lasting impact on twentieth-century literature, influencing early modernist writers such as Ernest Hemingway.

Robert W Lang is a cabinetmaker, draftsman and author of several woodworking books. He is senior editor of 'Popular Woodworking' and contributor to 'Fine Woodworking'. He lives in Heath, Ohio.

Mom to George: "You'll be the death of me."

In the slums of 19th century New York, people struggled to survive or struggled to get out. We meet the same conditions described in "Maggie: Girl of the Streets" in this brief novel as well. In fact, we even meet Maggie briefly. George is your typical "honest toiler" living with his mom in neat, clean, penury. Perhaps the author wished to create a whole panorama or series of portraits of slum New York in the style of Balzac or Zola, but he didn't live to do so. The short but brilliant, often ironic portrait is of a man on the slide. Sliding down. Falling in with the superficially friendly company of "fine fellows", George begins to drink, miss work, fight, lie, and hang out with a gang. His mother berates him to no use. The end is predictable. Perhaps this is far from an original story, but its execution is excellent. At the time, the boastful, aggressive, but often cowardly and bullying behavior of the slum youths was far from the more idealistic, moralizing tone of other authors. Crane was a Realist indeed. We don't have much of his work to remember as he died so young (29). You can read this short work and regret his death.

A great tool for improvment

The Staright-A Conspiracy hits home with me.

What I liked:

+ It is a book which everyone can pick up.
+ It has a lot of insight and offers great explanations (even though I myself found it to be almost too thurrow).
+ Demonstrates the potential of every person and really convinces the reader that they, as well as everyone else, can pursuit and achieve greatness.

What I thought could be improved:

- The Straight-A conspiracy has a lot of small boxes with "interesting" and vaguely related facts. I myself found some of them amusing, but they were, generally, just distracting.
- (I cannot believe I am writing this, but) The book tries too hard to be easy to read. It talks directly to the reader in a almost silly way from time to time.

Overall, it is a book I wish I would have read five years ago; however, even to a student at university, such as myself, the book was a good read. If you are struggling with school or just generally want to improve your outlook on learning new things, this is one of many books which might help you.

Excellent high School Text

I teach a high school course for struggling students. These are kids who have tremendous aptitude but have lost confidence in their ability to be good students. They think of themselves as not smart, bad at math, and believe those "facts" will never change. Reading this book together has transformed their stinking thinking and given them simple tools to begin turning those grades around. Understanding that practice is what makes a genius and that all information was once new to everyone on earth has given them hope that they, too, can master everything from Algebra to Elizabethan sonnets. I cannot recommend this book highly enough!

Full of gems

This is a book, I wish like the lottery I had as a kid. I am a video gaming, internet addicted, collegiate C student and part time athlete. Although with shame I admit, for the first time in my adult life, I can say I read a book front to back multiple times just for myself. Not only is it full of "Aha" insight, it's easy to read. This is especially true for someone frustrated with learning complex new things well, or quickly (I'm pointing to myself). If you can't get your kid to read it, read it for them or read it to them. We need this type of wisdom as a country and as a species. Thank you Hunter Maats for breaking down and spelling out this problem. This is a well priced book. The delivery was also very satisfying.

I don't claim to have any special knowledge of how the field of child psychology operates. I'm just an average Joe trying to make a living doing what child psychologists do. One of the most important things they do is read the work of other child psychologists. Over the two decades or so that I've been reading these works, I've developed a fairly comprehensive classification scheme for what I think are the most important research topics, who are the most influential child psychologists, and which are the most revolutionary scientific publications. In fact, I've gotten to the point that whenever I read the work of another child psychologist, the second thing I do is look over the References section (the first thing I do is read the title and abstract). The reason I turn to the references first is that I believe I can get a good sense of the tone, the purpose, and the outcome of the article, just by seeing who gets cited in it. My predictions are usually right on target.

But about 5 years ago, I began to wonder whether other child psychologists had developed their own mental classification schemes, and whether their schemes were similar to mine. For example, I wondered whether other researchers considered the works of Robert Fantz and Renée Baillargeon as revolutionary as I believed they were. So in the summer of 2000, I launched a major research project of my own in an attempt to uncover the major child psychology research projects published in the second half of the 20th century. I asked child psychologists from all walks of life to nominate and vote on the studies they believed were the Most Important, Most Revolutionary, Most Controversial, and Most Fascinating. This book describes the 20 Most Revolutionary Studies.

The project was a major undertaking, and I would be remiss if I didn't acknowledge the contributions of a number of generous individuals. I must first acknowledge the overwhelming effort put forth by Debbie Hoffman. Deb was involved in this project every step of the way; she pulled names from the Membership Registry of the Society for Research in Child Development, typed up mailing labels, taped gold coins to individual recruitment letters, helped tally the results, and reviewed my entire book for typos and grammatical errors. I am extremely grateful to her. Thanks also go to Chuck Moon, who helped me come up with the research design for the data collection portion of the project.
