The Heart of a Woman (1981) is an autobiography by African-American writer Maya Angelou. The book is the fourth installment in Angelou's series of seven autobiographies. Critic Mary Jane Lupton says it has "a narrative structure unsurpassed in American autobiography" and that it is Angelou's "most introspective" autobiography. The title is taken from a poem by Harlem Renaissance poet Georgia Douglas Johnson, which connects Angelou with other female African-American writers. The Heart of a Woman recounts events in Angelou's life between 1957 and 1962 and follows her travels to California, New York City, Cairo, and Ghana as she raises her teenage son, becomes a published author, becomes active in the US civil rights movement, and becomes romantically involved with a South African freedom fighter. Like Angelou's previous volumes, the book has been described as autobiographical fiction, though most critics, as well as Angelou, have characterized it as autobiography. Although most critics consider Angelou's first autobiography I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings more favorably, The Heart of a Woman has received positive reviews. Another triumph for Maya

Once again in her continuing autobiography Maya Angelou allows us into her world. She lets you know that she is just as human as the rest of us. I loved this book. It is well worth the money and I can't believe anyone would want to sell this book for a lousy 1.59 Maya's books should be bronzed and kept forever.

character interaction and psychological aspects that make this a great story and read

The back-jacket summary drew me in and proved (unlike so many novels) to be an honest pitch: A story about a student writer who, somewhat by chance, locates the subject of his biographical (college class) project at a nearby nursing home. The biographical subject, a Vietnam War vet who was convicted of rape and murder 30 years earlier, is dying of cancer thereby introducing an added, looming deadline to finish the writing project. The writer begins with the weary task of documenting the life of a murderer but, through his research, revises his mission to that of uncovering the buried truth of the old murder.
This novel is probably classified as a thriller but I consider it a literary thriller. There's thrills and spills to make it a page turner but it doesn't over rely on such action. For me it was the rich character development, character interaction and psychological aspects that make this a great story and read. My only disappointment (albeit minor) is that the story never reveals if the class project (the biographical paper) was a success with the English professor and whether the student decided to become a journalist or professional writer. As a reader I was left to draw my own favorable conclusions for these minor questions.
I seek out debut novels as they tend to be more honest than the writing of more "experienced" writers who often seem to be lured off course by fame, fortune and laziness. This novel is genuine writing and I'm looking forward to this author's future work, hoping to find similar honesty. I'm recommending and/or gifting copies of this novel to all of my reading friends.

Fantastic debut mystery!

It’s not particularly often that my wife reads and enjoys any of the books that cross my path. Whilst I endeavour to read what she reads (eventually) she doesn’t feel the same need to reciprocate, nor should she. Our last shared and loved book in common was Jess Walter’s Beautiful Ruins last year, until Eskens debut The Life We Bury fell into her hands after mine.

Fair to say we both loved it and it was fun checking in on her progress as she devoured it knowing what was in store.

A college assignment morphs into an investigation into a 30 year old murder mystery, that touches on a lot of things…..family, relationships, affection, abuse, parenting, autism, communication, guilt, loyalty, friendships, Vietnam, war, death, alcohol abuse, cancer……….and a whole lot of other things besides.

Great story line, superb characters that you care about, especially Joe and his neighbour Lila. I think the family dynamics and the evolving relationship between Joe and Lila and the part Jeremy unwittingly played was one of the most satisfying parts of the book. A close second to that would be the developing friendship between our murdering, cancer-stricken, veteran Carl and Joe.

I do like the odd book where the investigation into the mystery is conducted by a non-professional sleuth. It makes for a refreshing change from the police or more usually PI books, I read. Eskens arranged an interesting puzzle, which I was keen to see resolved, which it was.

Intriguing, entertaining, gripping and totally satisfying.

Definitely recommended if you like your mysteries, on the whole fairly straightforward, but with a lot of character and heart.

but I was disappointed in this book

Guess I'm in the minority here, but I was disappointed in this book. Too many strained metaphors, one-dimensional characters, predictable plot. Yeah, guess I didn't like it, though I really wanted to. I feel bad panning a book, because writing a novel can't be easy, and it somehow seems wrong to criticize something you yourself have never done and most likely couldn't. So, sorry, Mr. Eskens--it's just one woman's opinion and you know what opinions are like.

About the Author
A student of several Taoist masters, Mantak Chia founded the Healing Tao System in North America in 1979 and developed it worldwide as European Tao Yoga and Universal Healing Tao. He has taught and certified tens of thousands of students and instructors from all over the world and tours the United States annually, giving workshops and lectures. Mantak Chia rocks!!

After practicing other forms of esoteric energy from other teachers, I began to have serious headaches from massive pressure in my head and my chest/heart were giving me some very worrisome trouble. Mantak Chia explains that you cannot leave the energy in the upper body when you finish an exercise but must move it back to the tan tian. Interesting. No other teacher had told me that. Some teachers even say that the goal is to get the energy up and then leave it up. Thankfully, Mr Chia also explained how to correct the problem. I followed his instructions and within a few days my head pressure was gone and within a week my chest and heart were returning to normal.

Mantak Chia is the best teacher of moving energy around in your body. His methods work. His safety tips work. His healing tips work.

This is the beginning book for his system. You'll need this one before moving on to Iron Shirt and any of the others. Even if you are currently ready for the higher forms, I'd recommend a quick run through this book because his warnings are real and his solutions work. Moving the energy is possible and you might as well learn to do it correctly. Mantak Chia will tell you how.

So, move that energy and heal yourself! Follow the directions of Mantak Chia and you'll get better and better. Just remember to heed his warnings because he's right, leaving the energy in the up position is not a good thing!

The two exercises in this book are foundational and fundamental. You're going to need them if you want to move on to other levels. They also stand alone and work wonderfully if these are the only two exercises that you ever learn. Great book! I shudder to think were I'd be if I hadn't found it.

An Interesting System

On pages 89 and 145 in Awaken Healing Energy Through the Tao, Mantak addresses ringing in the ears. His explanation is not 100% accurate. If you are doing spiritual work and you experience ringing in the ears, you might have a negative entity or spirit (succubus) attached to your body. You may have etheric mind-control implants in your head and body, or you might be under psychic attack from the New World Order secret government.

The secret government/MKUltra mind-control program uses a frequency modulator with embedded hypnosis suggestions to attack its victims. The victim will experience a steady tone in the ear, especially the left ear. This was doable in 1974. The dark aliens also attack the left brain because it is associated with logic and thought processes.

Mantak’s remedies, which are swallowing saliva, relaxing the head, focusing on the navel, or massaging the naval area, won’t fix attacks from aliens and the MKUltra mind-control program.

Original Review:
This review is for two of Mantak Chia’s books. I’ve read Awaken Healing Energy Through the Tao and Fusion of the Eight Psychic Channels. I enjoyed these books. They are very informative; and they give the reader a glimpse into the Taoist belief system.

My gut tells me that Mantak has a sincere interest in helping others heal themselves with his Taoist energy system. I don’t believe there is any attempt to deceive people with dark practices, manipulations, or false information. I’ve seen videos of him teaching. He is warm, friendly, not egotistical in the least, and he shows a genuine interest in helping his audience to understand his teachings and practices. I give his sincerity 5 stars.

Both books are very detailed and have numerous illustrations to help the reader understand the specific acupuncture points of the body, specific energy points of the body, the direction of energy flow in the body, special meridians, the overall practices and meditations, and expected sensations from doing each exercise. I find his books to be descriptive, detailed, and organized. I give the instructional aspect of his books 5 stars.

Some of his justifications he uses to back up his system are questionable and should be considered as Mantak’s personal opinions. I do not agree with all of his justifications that he uses as proof to back up his system. I give this part of his books 3.5 stars.

The system itself won’t keep you from aging or dying. These are not judgment statements, these are practical observations. Mantak is still aging, even though he practices his system. As Mantak has aged, his body seems to have stopped metabolizing like a young male’s body would and has gotten larger. Again, these are just simple observations and are not statements to put down Mantak in any way.

I do like his explanation and practice of the inner smile. This could easily be a part of his cheery demeanor. I have noticed a positive difference in my body and attitude when I use the inner smile on my body parts.

There are numerous things that Mantak does not discuss in his books that are causes for blockages in a person’s energy flow. It might be because he has not experienced this in his lifetime, yet. I didn’t experience these dark oriented energy blocks until a few years back, either—and it’s not in my first book—so I don’t fault him at all for not having this in his books. Let me explain…

I have been doing spiritual meditation for over 12 years. When you meditate long periods of time with the intent of being more loving, caring, and helpful, you raise your vibration. When you raise your vibration, you can also start feeling other densities. You can also start feeling the influences and actions from the dark side—even with protection. The dark side uses etheric mind-control implants and 4th dimensional machinery to block the meridians, block the chakras, and stop your energy flow. It also seems that some of the reptilians and other dark entities know how to collapse a person’s auric field, too. I have experienced this first hand, and on a daily basis.

Mantak’s teachings do not cover this as a potential problem. In his books, all energy blocks are explained as problems with normal human existence, however, the New World/Old World agenda is part of everyday normal life. People can experience blocks and not know that they originated with a dark agenda to stop people from raising their consciousness. (If you want more information on this, start researching the New World Order, MKUltra mind-control programs, reptilians, grey aliens, and etheric implants. This will open your mind to things that aren’t covered in these books in regard to energy blockages.)

What else does this system do?

In Fusion of the Eight Psychic Channels, he does a great job of explaining how these eight meridian channels create the body. By focusing on these eight channels and doing meditations on the meridian paths, I have experienced a greater energy flow. I have combined this with his version of the Microcosmic and Macrocosmic Orbit—which he explains in great detail in Awaken Healing Energy Through the Tao.

His system does bring a tiny bit of doubt to the table. Mantak’s description, energy points, and meditations to move energy through the eight psychic channels does differ slightly from other teachers. The hard part is knowing which system is the right one and which system should be believed as correct.

I don’t do everything Mantak’s way, but I won’t discourage anyone from doing things as he describes, either. The best piece of advice I can give is to try a number of systems and continue with the one that gives you the best positive results.

I recommend these books for further exploration into Qi Gong, Nei Gong, and positive living.

The short review: Great Book!

This book reveals secrets of qigong/chi kung and Taoist practice that are seldom taught in the West even today... and were virtually unheard of before the publication of this book...

Had I reviewed this book when I originally read it, I'm sure I would have given it 5 stars. I only gave it 4 stars because Healing Light of the Tao is more modern, covers these same exercises and expands upon them (and shows the increased wisdom of 25 more years of practice and teaching by Mantak Chia). If you only read one, I would encourage you toward Healing Light of the Tao over Awaken Healing Energy Through the Tao.

After working with the exercises for a while, it seems to have lifted my energy and... 'softened' my personality.

Any time I am settled (relaxed and centered) I can usually feel expansion in my head right away when I breathe energy up my spine.

If there is one Taoist energy exercise that everyone should know... it is the Inner Smile. This exercise will bring more joy into your life right away... I can't keep from smiling even when I'm only thinking about it.

I don't know if I'm any smarter as a result of these exercises... ;-) but I do appreciate myself for reasons other than intelligence, now.

Mantak Chia has made major contributions to the understanding/practice of Qigong/Chi Kung/Taoist Yoga for the western practitioner... and this book is one of the first. It is well worth reading for any student of Taoism, meditation, or energy work.

Good Continuation To The Series

Bottom line is this book is probably slightly better than average compared to the series as a whole.

The good:
X New race encounters/tactics/relationships
X Same great space battles, but having to use some new tricks
X Dealing with the complications of aging fleet ships
X Some interesting events dealing with Syndics
X Nice growth of some 2nd-tier characters
X Less rehash/recap of what's in previous books (I guess the author realizes people buying this book will have almost certainly read one of the previous ones.)
X Less emphasis on the love/jealousy triangle between Geary, Diplomat Rione, and the Dauntless Captain
X Author picked a nice stopping point (not a terrible cliffhanger)

The bad:
X How many times does the main character have to say "I'm not Black Jack"? Seriously, we get it already. By now it's well into the hundreds.
X Same corny dialog. Probably a bit more than usual.
X A lot of characters remain very 2-dimensional / stereotype
X $13.00 for the kindle version. 'nuff said.
X At the end the author plugs another book "The Lost Stars: Tarnished Knight". It's basically part of the same timeline told from Syndic perspective. I think we need to focus on finishing the main story before we start milking it via side shows.

One last thought to my fellow readers hooked on stories like this: I recently stumbled across another series identical in flavor but actually a bit more intense: "Aurora: CV-01 (The Frontiers Saga)" is the first in the series. Short & cheap little books, but they are high-impact. Really surprised me. Might help with your craving for more until the next book in this series comes out.

Very entertaining addition

Characterization has often been in short supply in this series as can be expected with so many ship captains being cycled through, but I found this latest effort by Mr. Hemry to finally be hitting his stride. I am beginning to prefer this series to that on David Weber's Honor Harrington saga because Mr. Hemry's improving story-telling skills and exciting story line. Also, Jack is not a superman, just a guy trying to keep his people safe and knowing that some will die no matter how good a job he does.

SPOILERS:
For example, Duellos, who as one of Black Jack's key advisors was little more than a stereotype, was revealed to be an actual person with real emotions and concerns. Jane Geary, who in the last few books has been a bit of a whiner ("Oh, woe is me, trying to live up to the family name"), finally had that breakthrough moment with Jack. Great. About time. Also, we get to see that Rionne is not a complete witch, and why she has been acting so testy in the last two books.
END SPOILERS

Oh, yes, and there are aliens. And fighting. And new friends made and old enemies confronted. I love this series and I hope we will continue to see more of the Lost Fleet in the months to come. I am also looking forward to reading the Tarnished Knight series as well. If you like epic space opera, then this is the series for you, but do not start here. The plot is way too convoluted unless you read the series in order, but it is worth the effort.

I do not understand why you want us to pay more for the electronic version $12.99 which cost practically nothing, then you do for the papperback version $7.99 or even the hardcover $15 and its a shame because i really enjoy this series but refuse to pay that price.

About the Author
Dr. David Lykken has been a Fellow at the Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences at Palo Alto, California, and is now professor emeritus of psychology at the University of Minnesota. His studies of twins has attracted the attention of The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Wall Street Journal, and Newsweek. He is the author of two professional books, and has written for a variety of publications, including Discover, Psychology Today, and USA Today. He and his wife, Harriet, have three children and ten grandchildren and live very happily in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

Disappointing, but a brave effort

I really wanted to like this book. Its author is cheerful and well informed, and the subject is an important one. However, while the book has a promising beginning, it falls apart quickly - droning on like a university term paper in an alphabet soup about MZ, MZT, MZA, MPQ, LZT, MISTRA etc. (none of these acronyms are in the index)

Then full chapters are dedicated to bragging about his wonderful, well adjusted sons who received full scholarships to important universities and how wonderful various other members of his family are. He sounds happy - but I was much more interested in finding out how I could be more happy in my own life and helping others acheive the same. On this effort, he offers very little advice, ranging from a beer bread recipe to rambling on about making sure people are licensed before they can have children. This book would make an interesting, short pamphlet - but as a book it is deeply flawed.

A great psychologist...but a disappointing book

David Lykken is a superbly intellectual psychologist and I was hoping this book would reflect the power of that intellect, but this book ultimately collapses into some home spun family tales and "common sense" notions of happiness that may just be wrong. A real disappointment

A happy balance of science and experience

Dr. Lykken provides hard science underlying how happiness works, and what does and does not create it, which he mixes with a readable blend of life experience to make for a pleasant read. We get an awful lot of bad advice regarding how to seek happiness. This debunks the nonsense and provides insight into the real deal.
