About the Author
Laurie Schneider Adams received a Ph.D. in Art History from Columbia University. She is Professor Emerita of Art History at John Jay College, City University of New York, where she taught art survey, and at the Graduate Center, where she taught courses on the Italian Renaissance and on Art and Psychoanalysis. She has published articles on iconography and on art and psychology. She is the editor of Giotto in Perspectiveand of the quarterly journal Source: Notes in the History of Art; the author of A History of Western Art, Art across Time, The Methodologies of Art, Art and Psychoanalysis, and Art on Trial; and co-author (with Maria Grazia Pernis) of Federico da Montefeltro and Sigismondo Malatesta: The Eagle and the Elephant, as well as Lucrezia Tornabuoni de' Medici and the Medici Family in Fifteenth-Century Italy, and of 5 children's books (with Allison Coudert).

Text Book for Art History Class

Wow! For the summer semester, the advance notice from the instructor was to read the introduction and first three chapters as the material we will cover the first week. Dense. (Not "stupid-dense", "intense-dense"). Assignment total of about 120 pages, and I've been reading it for almost a week -- and still have one chapter to go! BUT, and this is the five-star reason for my good feelings about this book, it is not only readable, as in a non-preachy style, but utterly fascinating. If I were not a struggling old sophomore, I think I might even consider owning this book just as a fount of general knowledge about the foundations and developments of art throughout the world. If you are interested in the world history of art, get it, and enjoy it!

Took a really long time to ship

It took a very long time to ship but it did arrive within the estimated time. It seems they shipped it at the very last minute to make it within the delivery period. I actually called Amazon to question what was happening with it.

Otherwise, the book itself is very well organized and has beautiful pictures. While it's for a class, I will probably keep it rather than selling it back or trading it.

Our fascination with the everyday activities of people inspired us to write this book. The field of consumer behavior is the study of how our world is influenced by the actions of marketers and, at the same time, how marketers are influenced by us. At times fashion is created and dictated to consumers by retailers and influentials: consider the "What's In and What's Out" sections of fashion magazines! On the other hand, we see retailers and manufacturers struggling to predict what we will want to buy six months from now. Fashion forecasting is, in a sense, a science; but it's more of an art, and many successful marketing gurus have missed the boat on more than one fashion phenomenon.

Fashion is a driving force that shapes the way we live—it influences our apparel, hairstyles, art, food, cosmetics, cars, music, toys, furniture, and many other aspects of our daily lives that we often take for granted. Fashion is a major component of popular culture and one that is ever changing. Fashion touches most of us on a continual basis. We may be unaware of the introduction of a new fashion, but all of a sudden our eyeglasses, clothes, shoes, and even kitchen appliances start to look dated and old-fashioned. Looking back through old pictures and watching old TV shows, by sharp contrast, brings current fashion into view. Like a fish immersed in water, we are often unaware of our everchanging environment. The fashion industry has always been dynamic and fast-moving, but it faces an even greater rate of change in the new millennium." Consumers will find themselves buying fashion in many new ways in the future, including via the Internet. Information and technology will take on new importance. We already see the beginning of customized apparel for the masses. These changes will affect how we buy fashion and how we react to the marketplace.

In many classes students are passive observers learning about topics that affect them indirectly. But fashion concepts affect us directly, especially our students who work in retail and who sell fashion. They are the experts on what's in and what's out, and they are keenly aware of changes that occur on a continual basis—the lifeblood of the fashion industry. Students should have no trouble supplying their own up-to-the-minute examples to support many of the concepts they will read about in this book. Research and Consumer Focus

Results of many research studies are used throughout this text to illustrate marketing and consumer behavior theories and concepts as applied to fashion and to further the reader's understanding of how fashion shapes the everyday world of consumers. A marketing perspective is used, with the goal of understanding why consumers behave as they do and how to identify their needs, with the ultimate goal of maximizing company profits. However, it is also important not to forget the impact the marketplace has on the consumer. Therefore, a perspective of the consumer's well-being is also presented throughout this book. We believe that students going into retailing and marketing need to enter the field with a humanitarian perspective. Who looks out for the consumer's well-being and for that of the environment today? Laws are established to protect consumers—maybe more than they want sometimes, and maybe more than business wants also. Chapter 14, "Ethics, Social Responsibility, and Environmental Issues," and chapter 15, "The Role of Government and Business in Consumer Protection,' especially address the effects of marketing on the consumer. They review laws and practices that watch out for the consumer, that help prevent abuse by businesses, and that provide information and help to the consumer.

Book Arrived In Poor Condition: Content Is Fine Otherwise

My advice to anyone who rents textbook: PLEASE try to select a textbook based on better condition instead of a cheaper price. The cheaper, the poorer condition the book will be when you receive it. I will post pictures for proof.

In his book "Miracles" R. W. Schambach relates stories and testimonies of dramatic, dynamic, supernatural miracles of salvation, deliverance, healing and miraculous provision of financial needs. These are testimonies from the United States and throughout many countries of the world.

Schambach expresses his concern and misgivings as he describes how the conventional and contemporary church of today has exchanged form, ceremony, and ritual for the miraculous and supernatural.

The book introduces principles and conditions which are present when miracle powers are manifest. Known for his enthusiastic worship, faith building testimonies, and Bible based sermons, Schambach writes as he preaches in a down to earth practical style that endear him to the reader even as he has been loved by his constituency over his 60 years of revival ministry.

A Personal Experience Account With Miracles

R. W. Schambach just died in January, 2012. He was a traveling evangelist, televangelist, and faith healer for over 50 years. In this book, he recounts many of the miracles he witnessed, and to read them is to be inspired and in wonder of how God still works and heals today. Schambach bases this book on the story of Jesus turning the water into wine. Mary tells the servants at the wedding feast in Cana to "do whatever he tells you to do". And this is what Schambach relates in most of his miracle stories, listening for Jesus' voice and then doing it.

The miracles are inspiring, and are so many that one gets the impression that miracles flowed at his evangelistic healing meetings. His miracle stories are pretty short and concise, and the book is an easy read. His conclusion is that all can expect a miracle if one just believes in Jesus and does what he instructs in his Word. Those who are interested in miracles or are seeking a miracle in their own lives will certainly be intrigued by Rev. Schambach's bold declarations of miracles. He insists that God is still in the healing business today because of his great love for us. Our part is just to believe and not doubt.

Inspiring

Since getting this on a cut-price Kindle promotion and downloading it to my phone, I have read it through about 3 times, as I find it so faith-building to hear these testimonies of what God has been doing, not just in the Gospels and Acts, but also in our own generation. The stories are concise enough to be read in 5-10 minutes and provide a great inspiration to carry with you through the day.

But they will also challenge you to ask yourself, 'How much am I really trusting God in my own life?' Don't duck that challenge - it's what the book is really all about.

Not What I Expected

"Pleasure Unwoven: A Study Guide to the Film" led me to expect something more closely keyed to the film, rather than something more in the way of general background with only a few evocative discussion-starter questions. I was hoping for something more pedantic that I could use with substance abuing clients before and after viewing the film.

I got this to help teach clients and their families how addiction works, as for individuals with limited scientific knowledge, the movie can be overwhelming. (Props to the movie though, it was great.) This didn't offer much written breakdown of the important concepts or any study materials. I expected this to have activities, worksheets, or at least written explanations of the main concepts. There were about 3-4 activities in the book but they did not really illustrate the major concepts. I wanted to use this to help break down a complicated set of ideas to individuals who are beginning their recovery, and have limited cognitive function/attention span due to several years of drug/alcohol use. Especially compared to the movie, I was very disappointed.

I cannot say enough about this film, and the workbook is helpful for giving those visual reminders long after my group has seen the video. This film has set a new high bar by being a more adult level of format, and taking a positive approach to the topic of addiction as a brain disease.
