Amazon.com Review
Mistry does something that only the really natural writers can do: without apparent effort, manipulation or contrivance, he creates characters you like instantly and will gladly follow for as long as the novel leads. The book is about an Indian family during the years of Indira Ganhdi's rule; it's also a study of the times, its politics and corruption, and was especially interesting for me, who knows so little about life in the rest of the world. It had to be a good book: after I read Such a Long Journey, I wanted to go right out and buy a plane ticket and see India for myself.

From Publishers Weekly
Mistry, Bombay-born author of Swimming Lessons and Other Stories from Firozsha Baag , serves up an exotic feast with this novel. The year is 1971, and India is ready to pursue a war against Pakistan over the region that will become Bangladesh. This chaotic period is seen through the eyes of one Gustad Noble, a family man and Parsi bank clerk in Bombay. Gustad's fortunes have begun to change for the worse, with disappointments and bad luck sweeping through his previously secure way of life. When an old friend secretly recruits him to assist in a seemingly heroic mission under the aegis of Indira Gandhi's CIA-like operatives, he becomes enmeshed in a series of dangerous events, with tragic results. Mistry's prose displays the lightest of witty touches, and the narrative is often quite funny, particularly when it invites us inside the minds of the knowable, likable, somehow familiar men and women whose activities propel the plot. A writer of enormous range and shrewdness, Mistry delivers no manifesto, but an intelligent portrait of the corrupt aspects of Indira Gandhi's years in power. Throughout his byzantine scenario, he demonstrates empathy for and deep understanding of his characters. His novel evokes Rushdie in its denser, florid moments, and T. Coraghessan Boyle in its more madcap flights.

From Library Journal
Set in Bombay in 1971, this novel is both microscopic and macrocosmic in its portrait of the various lives of Gustad Noble--his family life, his work as a bank clerk, and, ultimately, his innocent participation in national intrigue. India's overall decay and corruption is evident everywhere, from the petty behavior of Noble's neighbors and friends to the double-dealing of Indira Gandhi's regime. Yet, at the end, Gustad Noble, with much of his previously placid existence disrupted, resolutely continues on his arduous journey of survival. There is one serious flaw--a much-needed appendix of Hindi expressions used in the story, with English translations--but otherwise this is an unusually superior novel.

Portrait of a family in Bombay
By Annie Maus
Many years ago, I read and was greatly moved by Mistry's novels, A Fine Balance and A Family Affair. Like his other books, Such a Long Journey deals with family: both blood family and family in the looser sense as community, sometimes beloved, sometimes despised. And it deals with government, corruption and war, primarily through the lens of one family: the Nobles.

Gustad Noble, a Parsi living in Bombay with his wife and three children has been a good and honorable man . But as the novel begins, life for his family and him begins to unravel: He has dreams for his eldest son—dreams that his son doesn't share; Gustad works as a bank clerk and although he earns a salary, the family must budget tightly to make ends meet. When his daughter becomes ill, Gustad's wife must sell some gold bracelets to buy medicine. Asked by an intermediary to do a favor for a close friend who had suddenly disappeared, he hesitantly agrees, and thus finds his life becoming more and more entangled with a government about to go to war.

Mistry takes you deep inside the family and their friends. The reader comes to understand the conflicting motivations, the misunderstandings, the pettiness, and the pain of each character and in turn, the reader feels that pain and anger and bitterness (and joy, when it comes, albeit infrequently).

What makes Mistry so great to read is the respect and empathy he has for his characters. As a reader, you share this empathy and feel rewarded by being so intimately connected to people whose lives are so very different from yours.

Another Great Mistry
By Milashka
Having read Mistry's "A Fine Balance", which left me with high expectations, "Such A Long Journey" fell flat for me at first. It was a pleasant enough read to keep going, but it didn't grab me until page 60, at which point I could not put the book down. Mistry's gift of developing his characters and spinning the story draws the reader in eventually. Unfortunately, towards the conclusion, the book again flatlined for me - to be honest, I was a bit disappointed at how things played out - but things picked up steam again at the very end. It was somewhat of a strange ride, but very enjoyable nonetheless. It may not be fair to say so, but this being his first novel, it almost feels like a practice run of what was to follow in the brilliant "A Fine Balance" - as if Mistry already had something greater in mind but didn't quite dare to venture there yet. In both novels, there is his signature mix of tragic and mundane events (although it's more on the mundane side here), characters from many walks of life, and a good dose of humor. In both novels, there also is a similarly strained father-son relationship; a main character that is being set up and entangled in a crime; buildings/walls are being torn down and of course, movies, markets and train rides which are part of life in India.

So, while it was slow-moving at times, it's still a wonderful read, and I highly recommend it.

P.S. This book was made into a movie (1998, BBC) of the same title.

An intimate look at relationships in a historical context
By R. Harrison
This author is indeed talented. I love the way he integrates fiction and nonfiction. Extremely difficult to put Rohinton Mistry books down, they take time to read and to digest for they evoke a response from your own personal value system by allowing you into the lives and families of working class people in another country where the reality of gender and caste inequality exists alongside a decaying political system. Mistry takes us on 'Such a Long Journey' that enables me to see and hear the frailty of human existence and relationships without harsh judgement for those who hope and strive for an ideal and dream against what can seem like insurmountable odds. I emerge with more empathy for those whose voice is not heard and grateful to be born in a place and time where this kind of reality is one I only get to read about.
