This illuminating exposé on a dark chapter of American history tells how the flourishing German culture in the United States was wiped out by a fury of anti-German hysteria during World War I. American patriots eradicated the German language from schools, churches, and newspapers. Germans, once America’s biggest, proudest, and most successful ethnic group were targets of hate, persecution, and even lynchings and vigilante hangings. German cooks were burned, newspapers were closed, and sauerkraut was renamed “liberty cabbage” —the “freedom fries” of modern times.

I had no idea how intense the hatred of Germany ...
By D Crossland
I had no idea how intense the hatred of Germany became in America during World War One, or how thoroughly it has curtailed the German influence on American culture ever since. I thought this was a fascinating, well-written account of a forgotten witch-hunt that no doubt damaged America. And a fresh angle among all the new literature surrounding the centenary of WW1.

Burning Beethoven is an amazingly knowledgable report about a phenomenon ...
By Thomas Krumenacker
Burning Beethoven is an amazingly knowledgable report about a phenomenon that is widely unknown also to the german public. Insightful and well-written the book highlights a widely underappreciated or forgotten chapter of history. A very worthwile reading also for a german audience. Similar to "Rocking the Wall" Erik Kirschbaum manages to dig out so far unnoted aspects of US-German relations.

Freedom Fries
By Springsteen Fan
I didn’t realize that before ‘freedom fries’ there were ‘liberty steaks’ and ‘liberty cabbage’. World War One did some funny things to Americans but I didn’t know they beat and mistreated German immigrants as badly as they did. Wow, amazing story.
Also clear that America's intolerance of immigrants has not just been a recent development.
