And Yet...: Essays, by Christopher Hitchens

“America’s foremost rhetorical pugilist.” —John Giuffo, The Village Voice

The death of Christopher Hitchens in December 2011 prematurely silenced a voice that was among the most admired of contemporary writers. For more than forty years, Hitchens delivered to numerous publications on both sides of the Atlantic essays that were astonishingly wide-ranging and provocative. The judges for the PEN/Diamonstein-Spielvogel Award for the Art of the Essay, posthumously bestowed on Hitchens, praised him for the way he wrote “with fervor about the books and writers he loved and with unbridled venom about ideas and political figures he loathed.” He could write, the judges went on to say, with “undisguised brio, mining the resources of the language as if alert to every possibility of color and inflection.” He was, as Benjamin Schwarz, his editor at The Atlantic magazine, recalled, “slashing and lively, biting and funny—and with a nuanced sensibility and a refined ear that he kept in tune with his encyclopedic knowledge and near photographic memory of English poetry.” And as Michael Dirda, writing in the Times Literary Supplement, observed, Hitchens “was a flail and a scourge, but also a gift to readers everywhere.”

The author of five previous volumes of selected writings, including the international bestseller Arguably, Hitchens left at his death nearly 250,000 words of essays not yet published in book form. And Yet… assembles a selection that usefully adds to Hitchens’s oeuvre. It ranges from the literary to the political and is, by turns, a banquet of entertaining and instructive delights, including essays on Orwell, Lermontov, Chesterton, Fleming, Naipaul, Rushdie, Pamuk, and Dickens, among others, as well as his laugh-out-loud self-mocking “makeover.” The range and quality of Hitchens’s essays transcend the particular occasions for which they were originally written. Often prescient, always pugnacious, and formidably learned, Hitchens was a polemicist for the ages. With this posthumous volume, his reputation and his readers will continue to grow.

Christopher Hitchens was the cartographer of his own literary and political explorations. He sought assiduously to affirm—and to reaffirm—the ideas of secularism, reason, libertarianism, internationalism, and solidarity, values always under siege and ever in need of defending. Henry James once remarked, “Nothing is my last word on anything.” For Hitchens, as for James, there was always more to be said.

Amazon.com Review

An Amazon Best Book of December 2015: What a tragic irony that in this era of surreptitious videotaping, political posturing and runaway media, we no longer have the brilliant Christopher Hitchens to decipher it all for us. The award-winning essayist (many say “polemicist” and mean it as a compliment) died of esophageal cancer in 2011. But if we can only speculate as to what Hitchens would have to say about the world in 2015, we at least can read these collected essays, some already published, some not – at his death, it is said that he left nearly 250,000 words of as-yet-unpublished essays. Whether old or new to us, the pieces collected here are funny and wry and searingly intelligent; not a single nuance or nanosecond of phoniness slips by “Hitch.” Whether analyzing the romanticization of revered Cuban revolutionary leader Che Guevara, or remarking that the conservative pundit Pat Buchanan is a “faux bonhomme,” Hitchens quietly astounds us still with his characteristic combination of erudition and commonality. Reading Hitchens was always a wry, witty pleasure; now that he’s gone, it’s more like having a wonderful dream, a nocturnal visit from a beloved, brilliant friend. --Sara Nelson

Review
Praise for And Yet...

"Christopher Hitchens is sorely missed, And Yet…, reading his new book – a bounty of famous scalps, thunder-blasted targets, and a few love letters – is such a powerful reminder of the late V.F. contributing editor and notorious provocateur in chief’s erudite and scathing assessments of American culture,it’s almost as if he’s here."
— Vanity Fair

“Just as with rock bands that seem to have done more farewell tours than pre-farewell performances, there's probably more in the vault—but in this case, that's a very good thing indeed.”
— Kirkus Reviews

“A very good new collection… The best reason to read AND YET… may be its inclusion of a three-part essay, ‘On the Limits of Self-Improvement,’ that Mr. Hitchens wrote for Vanity Fair about trying to get himself in shape. It is as hilarious as it is wise, and I predict it will be published before long as its own pocket-size book… The moment when Mr. Hitchens undergoes the male version of a Brazilian bikini wax… has yet to be recognized, but surely will be, as among the funniest passages in this country’s literature.”
—The New York Times

“In this volume one is given a model of how to be a thoughtful journalist. Today, four years after his death, Hitchens is correctly seen as a writer who was unafraid to swim against the tide, even to the point of being politically incorrect… All in all, another great book of essays from a writer who we wish were still alive to produce more copy.”
—National Review

Praise for Christopher Hitchens:

"The essays in 'Arguably' remind us of other dimensions to this singular writer and thinker that are sometimes overshadowed by the range of his political commentary. Though there are plenty of essays on politics to be found here, the book also treats us to other arrows in Hitchens' proverbial quiver, including his bracing, exhilarating approach to important literary figures...Its value is clear and needs no justification. And since his diagnosis of esophageal cancer last year, opportunities to hear him, understandably, have been fewer. Which is another thing 'Arguably' inadvertently addresses - for in reading this collection of his thoughts, immersing yourself in the particular turns of phrase and associations of Hitchens' wit, you suddenly realize something else: You're hearing his voice again."—Nick Owchar, Los Angeles Times

"Christopher Hitchens's selected essays are Arguably (Twelve) his finest to date."—Vanity Fair

"One reads him [Hitchens] despite his reputation as someone who wants to drink, argue, and tear the ornaments off the tree, because he is, first and last, a writer, an always exciting, often exacting, furious polemicist. This fact, the most salient thing about him, often gets neglected in the public jousting. Arguably, Hitchens's new collection, forcefully proves this point. Consisting of three kinds of writing - literary journalism, political commentary, and cultural complaint - Arguably offers a panoramic if somewhat jaundiced view of the last decade or so of cultural and political history."—The Boston Globe

"Opinions are to Christopher Hitchens what oil is to Saudi Arabia. This collection, featuring his liveliest, funniest and most infamous essays....There is a time for the balanced, even-handed and sober approach - but why bother with any of that when you could be reading someone as provocative and impish as Hitchens?"—The New York Post

“Arguably the best—and certainly the most prolific—essayist Britain has produced since George Orwell.”
—Andrew Anthony, The Observer

“A rare blend of elements: the buoyant and the serious, the streetwise and the learned, the crude joking of the pub and ‘the cut glass Oxford tones’ of civilized debate.”
—David Castronovo, Commonweal

Nearly 250,000 posthumously published words of sardonic sagacity
By Bookreporter
It would be nearly impossible to read in English without at some point coming across an article or quotation by Christopher Hitchens, an American transplanted from England whose life spanned several critical phases in modern history. Hitchens was born for the role of social critic, but so much more --- acerbic yet kind at times, strict yet also forgiving. He suffered fools gladly, as grist for his mill, and the landscape of his writing is littered with fiery phrases like luminous gems. He was a professor, columnist, critic, essayist, editor and award-winning author (HITCH-22, ARGUABLY). AND YET… is a posthumous collection drawn from the nearly 250,000 words of sardonic sagacity he left behind.

Hitchens was an iconoclast who happily toppled all idols, from Charles Dickens to Hillary Clinton to James Bond to V. S. Naipaul to Christmas. But not always without heart. He can, for example, cite Dickens’ limitations --- his contemptuous anti-Americanism, his annoying gift-card-ization of Christmas --- while lauding his little-known largesse: Dickens revamped Fagin in OLIVER TWIST and later created a kind, helpful Jewish moneylender (Mr. Riah in OUR MUTUAL FRIEND) after receiving an anguished plea from a Jewish lady concerned with the biased characterization of her people.

In 2009, Hitchens damned the newly elected President Obama with faint praise, calling him a “cool cat” who “treads so lightly…that all impressions he has so far made are alarmingly slight.” He gleefully reported Hillary Clinton’s meeting with Sir Edmund Hillary, at which she recklessly declared that “her mother had actually named her for this famous and intrepid explorer." Hitchens was pleased to retort that Clinton was born in 1947, six years before Sir Edmund gained worldwide acclaim for his ascent of Mt. Everest.

Hitchens denigrates the American mania for Christmas with a barrage of verbal potshots --- “obligatory generosity,” “deadening routine,” “angels and menorahs on the White House lawn” --- reminding us that our Puritans banned such blasphemies as burning logs and lit-up trees. He handles the subject with his usual articulate waggishness, making us smile a bit at ourselves. His detractors might point to the root cause of his Scrooge-like disdain for our favorite holiday: Hitchens was what he liked to call an “antitheist,” firmly convinced that the big three religions were responsible for most of the ills of the world.

But Hitchens is quite able to mock himself, as here in a three-part essay, “On the Limits of Self-Improvement,” describing his attempts to look and feel younger: seminars, dieting, smoking cessation, dentistry and the magic of photoshopping. He concludes that his smile is “no longer frightening to children,” and his hair and skin no longer look “as if harvested from a battlefield cadaver.”

Since essays are brief by nature, one must draw conclusions about the man himself from the broader evidence this collection presents. Though the world has seen the last of Hitchens in the flesh, his words live on --- and, one suspects, we have not read the last of them.

Sort of Like God, This Is Not Great
By Pop Bop
This is a fairly interesting, but not particularly satisfying, collection for the reader who is already a Hitchens fan. Some bits and pieces highlight why Hitchens was an important and unpredictable voice, but the rest display the weaknesses that dogged his less inspired efforts. And much of it is rather predictable.

I enjoyed his thoughts about Thanksgiving as the most inclusive and welcoming of American holidays; it had a spark of honest feeling and a generous spirit. The Christmas bashing has its moments, but covers familiar ground. We get a generous and thoughtful treatment of Che, but then an almost fawning piece about Oriana Fallaci that fits right into that period when every serious journalist or public intellectual was required to write a worshipful piece about her.

And so it goes. Hillary bashing, obscure political observations, some Orwell, Edmund Wilson - the usual suspects. There's an odd set of pieces about aging and self-improvement that is almost literally about navel gazing.

I think the bottom line for me was this - if you admired and enjoyed Hitchens' work, and miss him, and wish he were here right now to ponder current events, this book will appeal. If you are a completest fan, this book will definitely appeal. If you are new to Hitchens, this collection might lead you to wonder what all the fuss was about. If you want a "Greatest Hits" collection, this may feel more like outtakes and lost tracks.

(Please note that I received a free advance ecopy of this book in exchange for a candid review. Apart from that I have no connection at all to either the author or the publisher of this book.)

These essays are a great introduction to Hitchens if you've never read his writing ...
By Peadar
I was very excited when this volume arrived today. It's a collection of essays which have not appeared in book form, but have appeared in the various columns Hitchens had over the years.

I have every book he penned, so getting my hands on this book was an obvious provision.

These essays are a great introduction to Hitchens if you've never read his writing before. It's a much easier read than some of his other collections (Arguably, Love Poverty & War).

I got through it in a couple of hours. Well worth reading.

A comprehensive handbook, could add more practical tips
By dr. JT
The Handbook of Biological Confocal Microscopy is a great collection of essays on a multitude of topics ranging from optics, laser physics and photochemistry to fluorescent labeling of cells and live cell microscopy. The depth of some essays may be beyond the comfortable grasp of a biologist but after all, this is a handbook not a textbook. There is one chapter of general confocal tips, which is very useful but in general the book is aimed more at experts than casual users (not that there's anything wrong with that). Some chapters appear to not have been updated for the last edition and thus sound a touch outdated but this mostly concerns some technical chapters. All in all a very good source of fairly detailed information about (almost) all aspects of biological confocal microscopy.

Great book!

If you want to really learn about LSCM, then THIS is the option. Every chapter was written by experts in the particular subjet and it covers from the theory to solving practical problems with your LSCM observations. A great reference book.

Comprehensive, but patchy written
By Maxim
It's a good comprehensive reference book on the imaging techniques of year 2005 (by now, the book lost a bit of this "comprehensiveness"). I'd give the book 5 stars, if not the price, for which I expect the editor to work a little more to make the chapters more coherent, correct for, sometimes, heavy language and explanations (it's too clear, the book is written by many different people) and make the book to look less as a tutorial and more as a textbook, with a logical connection between the chapters. Given that I would recommend this book to someone, who needs to go into details of many different topics of microscopy and wants to be sure he doesn't miss anything (as of 2005).

Nine Ways to Cross a River: Midstream Reflections on Swimming and Getting There from Here, by Akiko Busch

From Thoreau to Edward Abbey to Annie Dillard, American writers have looked at nature and described the sublime and transcendent. Now comes Akiko Busch, who finds multitudes of meaning in the practice of swimming across rivers. The notion that rivers divide us is old and venerated, but they also limn our identities and mark the passage of time; they anchor communities and connect one to another. And, in the hands of writer and swimmer Akiko Busch, they are living archives of human behavior and natural changes.

After a transformative swim across the Hudson just before September 11, Busch undertook to explore eight of America's great waterways: the Hudson (twice), the Delaware, the Connecticut, the Susquehanna, the Monongahela, the Mississippi, the Ohio, and the Current. She observes each river's goings-on and reflects on its history (human and natural) and possible futures. Some of the rivers have rebounded from past industrial misuse; others still struggle with pollution and waste. The swims are also opportunities to muse on the ordinary passages faced by most of us-the death of a parent, raising children, becoming older-and the ways in which the rhythms and patterns of the natural world can offer reassurance, ballast and inspiration. A deeply moving exploration of the themes of renewal and reclamation at midlife, Nine Ways to Cross a River is a book to be treasured and given to friends.

From Publishers Weekly
Starred Review. Heraclitus famously noted that you can't step into the same river twice, and Hudson Valley author Busch (Geography of Home) reaches this literal truth by swimming across nine different rivers—many once polluted beyond recognition—in order to "reclaim" them for personal and communal renewal. An avid swimmer, Busch resolved to swim across these rivers (with friends, in summer and during benevolent weather conditions) over the course of four years, despite repeated local admonitions not to go in the water: from the upper Hudson, where she resides, to the Delaware, Connecticut, Susquehanna, Monongahela, Cheat, Mississippi, Ohio and Current Rivers. Along the way she shares delightful lore about these important waterways, insinuating aspects of each river's particular history and beauty, such as that the Hudson was called "the river that flows two ways" by the local Algonquin; the Susquehanna is listed as the most polluted river; the Mississippi is the longest and most changing; while the Current in Missouri is the clearest. Busch enlists reflections from environmentalists and nature writers such as Edward Abbey and Thoreau, and taps into local organizations (e.g., Pete Seeger's) that claim that swimming in a river leads to a sense of stewardship. Busch's journey across these rivers becomes an elegant metaphor for life. (July)

From Booklist
Busch has the gift of seeing the world new, and here brings her contemplative intelligence to nature, chronicling her intimate involvement with rivers. Busch swam across the river she loves best, the Hudson, in August 2001, and somehow the tragic events that followed made it seem "essential to mark each summer after that with a river crossing." Not that Busch is interested in athletic feats. Instead, her immersions literally and figuratively in the Delaware, Connecticut, Susquehanna, Monongahela, Mississippi, and other rivers involve pondering each one's complex and telling history, particularly its "industrial archaeology." As Busch details the grave abuses rivers have sustained and profiles various river keepers, including the Hudson's most famous advocate, Pete Seeger, she recognizes that as "the damage arrives collectively, so too does recovery." Writing with a swimmer's economy, propulsion, and buoyancy, Busch muses with quietly thrilling originality and resonance over the profound metaphors and life lessons rivers embody. In all, a beautiful and gracefully enlightening book of riverine reflections. Donna Seaman

Review

“Akiko Busch, accompanied by friends, gamely swims across the Hudson River, the Delaware, the Connecticut, the Susquehanna, the Monongahela, the Cheat, the Mississippi and the Current. She revels in the ordinary pleasures of this extraordinary activity and, in Nine Ways to Cross a River, brings the reader into the textures of the waters and the conversations she has on the riverbanks….She is a beautiful writer, and she pulls off this difficult writing feat. Swimming is such a solitary, quiet and peaceful activity. It's hard to bring others into the perceptions of a swimmer's mind, even with dramas of fast currents, water snakes and industrial waste added. But Busch is a master at describing the pleasures of everyday life, and she involves the reader in the summer sensuality of swimming outdoors, the fun of escaping the city with friends, the desire to move and stretch fluidly and the accomplishment of traveling stroke by stroke from one bank to another. Her metaphors are neatly tucked into her inviting style, and we travel luxuriously with her.” ―Maud Lavin, Chicago Tribune

“What started out for the author as a carefree Hudson River swim in August 2001 turned into a passion. Over the next four years, Busch swam in nine rivers (including the Delaware, Mississippi, and Current), exploring the textures, tastes, and speeds of each while also meeting some of the mostly anonymous advocates involved with their recovery from decades of environmental abuse…The spiritual benefits of floating downstream come across with soothing simplicity: ‘All of these rivers have conferred a kind of fluid axis that sets me right every time.' B.” ―Tim Purtell, Entertainment Weekly

“A beautiful, lyrical journey--full of history, meditative thoughts and nature around us and in us! Loved the trip!” ―Kathleen, Islandtime Books & More, Washington Island, WI

“[Akiko Busch has] a gift for nature writing that brings to mind Annie Dillard and Edward Abbey.” ―Marc Weingarten, Los Angeles Times

“In a way, Busch swims for all of us, bringing another perspective, one drenched in the essence of these waterways...Whether we swim in them, fish in them, walk along them, float our boats on them, or just stare at them, what matters, she knows, is that we care about them.” ―Steve Grant, Hartford Courant

“Writer and avid swimmer Busch spent four years swimming across nine rivers around the country--and fell in love with their history and beauty.” ―People Magazine

“This inspiring little book shows how this world will be saved: by tens of millions of little efforts, in the end succeeding where big expensive efforts of power-hungry men have failed.” ―Pete Seeger

“Nine Ways to Cross a River is beautifully written. It's compelling, transcendental, reflective, and just pure fun like being splashed with a handful of cool water on a hot sticky summer's day. There is so much more to say about the book--so many layers of understanding and clarity and philosophy and poetry. At times, it seems as if Akiko is immersed in the water and is singing along with the river's song through her melodic voice.” ―Lynne Cox, author of Swimming to Antarctica and Grayson

Love love love this book
By Patricia B. Campbell
I first read excerpts of the book in a 2007 New York Times Magazine article. It so impressed me that I immediately went to the computer and registered to swim the Hudson River that summer(one of the rivers in the book) and did. The book, not surprisingly, is even better than the excerpts. This year I will swim the Hudson again. I would recommend the book to swimmers, environmentalists and pretty much anyone who would like to take some time to reflect on rivers and what they mean to us.

Soul Cleansing
By Douglas K. Smith
Nine Ways is among the most beautifully writing to come along in years. That alone is reason to jump in and swim along with Akiko Busch. But there's more to this elegant and lyrical and watery reflection. Here is a viscous restorative that, whenever you dip in or out, is sure to salve your soul.

This is one of my favorite books I've ever read. I've read it twice in fact and may one day read again. Today I'm purchasing a copy for a friend. In addition, this book has inspired me to swim more often. Deep thanks to the author, Akiko Busch.

Coal: A Human History, by Barbara Freese

In this remarkable book, Barbara Freese takes us on a rich historical journey that begins hundreds of millions of years ago and spans the globe. Prized as “the best stone in Britain” by Roman invaders who carved jewelry out of it, coal has transformed societies, launched empires, and expanded frontiers. It made China an eleventh-century superpower, inspired the Communist Manifesto, and helped the North win the American Civil War. Yet coal’s transformative power has come at tremendous cost, from the blackening of our lungs and skies, to the perils of mining, to global warming. Now updated with a new chapter describing the high-stakes conflict between coal’s defenders and those working to preserve a livable climate, Coal offers a captivating history of the mineral that helped build the modern world but now endangers our future.

Excellent overview on the historical importance of coal
By George Fulmore
For those interested in world history, this book fills in many blanks. It is a pleasurable read, full of innumerable factoids and insights about how coal has affected human history. It also adds information about the transition from England to the U.S., one that involves coal, wood and the increasing thrust for power. I've read other books on coal. I don't think that there is a better one than this one.

Things really start with the Chinese, but that is disclosed in a later chapter of the book. For the most part, the book focuses on Britain, then the United States. It tells us that the Romans did a bit of burning coal in Britain, but after they left, centuries of the Dark Ages recorded no further progress. But when England awakes by the 1500s, and begins to burn through most of its wood, and as it adds more and more people, it becomes the first western nation to mine and burn coal in large quantities. This, of course, eventually leads to "a coal-fired industrial revolution."

Interestingly, most of the coal land in England early on was owned by the Catholic Church. But as most coal on the surface was gathered, and getting to the stuff deeper in the ground required a more extensive operation, The Church was not really up to the task. When Henry VIII decided to become the head of the Church of England, that really freed things up. The richest coal lands in the country now became property of the crown. English merchants and industrialists took over from there.

By 1700, the city of Newcastle, in northeastern England, had been producing coal for more than a century. Expanding mines would produce more coal than ever, as rural immigrants came to the area for work. The book paints a horrible picture of the life of the coal miners, who worked in cramped, dark, cold and wet, underground conditions. Tunnels collapsed, explosions occurred, water rushed into the mines, poisonous gas would kill. But the Newcastle coal mines were thought to be inexhaustible, and, per the book, "by 1700, Britain was mining five times more coal than the rest of the world, combined." The demand for it was becoming insatiable.

As the mine shafts and tunnels went deeper underground, water entered and needed to be extracted. This was a tedious task, first done by manpower, then by horsepower. But what got things turned around was the invention of the steam engine.

By the 1760s, steam engines, fueled by coal, itself, were doing the work of fifty horses, each, pumping water out of coal mines all over England and Scotland. Then, James Watt came along to improve the fuel efficiency of the pumps and their horsepower. His engines were suitable, as well, for factories. Between 1780 and 1830, people would move in droves to the cities to join the industrial workforce. Britain was producing 80% of the world's coal, and the epicenter of its output was to become Manchester, with its production of cotton cloth and other finished goods.
Coal was the base of things. It supplied all the fuel for the factories. It was used in the homes for heat, and it was used for cooking, as well. Manchester had factories with more than a thousand workers, each, and the steam engine encouraged increasingly larger economies of scale. Additionally, heated or baked coal was the source of gas lighting, with the gas being piped to the factories to supply bright lighting. The shifts in the mines were twelve hours. There was no place for public parks or recreation areas in Newcastle or Manchester. The air of the cities was thick with smoke. The average life expectancy was only seventeen years.

Coal also fueled the steam engines on the ships that moved coal from its source to the factories. Canals were built, then, eventually, came the railroads. It was all about the movement of coal to the factories. The city of London developed into the hub of Britain's industrial output.
With the population of London going from about 200,000 in 1600 to one million in 1800, it had become the largest city in the world by 1750. It became ten times larger than Manchester. By 1860, it would house three million. But like Manchester, the air of London was foul, with smoke and dust everywhere.

Then came the opportunities of a new land. Masses of British workers saw their escape from the crowded slums of Manchester and London via a voyage across the Atlantic to a land of fresh air and free land. In fact, when arriving in American, the colonists found an endless supply of lumber. This would serve as an early export product on the immigrant ships returning to England, where wood continued to be in short supply. The colonists had no need to search for coal, but, in time, the new nation would realize that below its land was the largest concentrations of coal in the world.

Just as coal fueled the British industrial revolution, so it would in America. The state of Pennsylvania was full of the stuff, as were the Appalachians to the south. The city of Philadelphia would become the nation's largest and richest city. And, just as had been the case in England, the supply of wood would be tested and reduced. With the price of wood rising, Americans turned more and more to coal as a source for power and heat. Canals were built, and the railroads, which first burned wood, made their transition to coal. Huge factories developed, and the population began to shift from small towns to urban centers. Again, the pattern was similar to that of England.

American's second industrial revolution was built on coal. By the late 1890s, America led the world in coal production. (Recently, China has gained this honor.) Britain and Germany fell behind. Few could imagine that progress in the world was not dependent on coal.
The book covers the developments of coal in the world wars, and it tells us of the beginnings of the use of petroleum products. It covers the problems caused by sulfur dioxide and the industry's efforts to reject regulations. But it reminds us that, even today, coal is responsible for the production of half of our nation's electricity. And it tells us of the shift in the major source of America's coal from West Virginia to Wyoming.

There is a chapter on the history of coal in China. Then, the book ends with a summary/review chapter, named, "A Burning Legacy." Again, it tells us that coal took Britain from a rural nation to a world-class commercial power. It made London the largest city in the world. The steam engine and the railway expanded things, as coal provided cheap iron and steel for all kinds of things that advanced the western world.

"Coal, A Human History." I recommend it.

Take your lumps!
By S. Rogers
As with most of my reviews I get about a third or halfway through a book and declare it one the best books I could imagine reading; 'Coal: A Human History' is no exception. Just the sheer background of info starting with its formation, discovery and industrialization make it a book not to be put down or taken lightly. The ancillary history lessons one gets from reading 'one subject' books like these are just priceless, in my opinion. The Industrial Revolutions of both England and the U.S. dependencies on coal are explored here in pretty good detail to my liking. At these affordable prices you should pick up a copy of 'Coal' to see for yourself. Barbara Freese has done a very good thing here.

Excellent research, reasoning - not flashy, very solid
By Roger D. Curry
There is much less advocacy here than in (the terrible) Coal River or (the good) Moving Mountains, but just as much information, both scientific and historical, primarily the latter. Freese is a former assistant attorney general of Minnesota who reasons rather than assails. She reasons (correctly, I believe) that we humans use energy from the sun to function. "Life on earth is, in short, a vast and sophisticated system for capturing, converting, storing and moving solar energy." As a nascent civilization developed, humans used solar-source energy stored in recently dead plants and animals to power their lives. Those resources limit the population that the earth can support. For example, a small cabin in a temperate climate (like that of West Virginia) uses about 15 cords of firewood per year, which is the output of just under an acre. (One cord equals 128 cubic feet.) In England, where coal was first mined, the forests were vanishing at an alarming rate. Up to that point, we were "spending the interest," the current solar energy converted.

And then came coal, solar-source energy from long-dead plants which had stored energy collected over millions of years, and which let us begin profligately spending the principal. There was (and is) so much coal that until the mid-20th Century, it was considered functionally infinite. Even the oil industry was made possible with the power of coal. The dependence on coal is alarming - fully half of the electricity that we use comes from coal. The environmental effects have crept up to an alarming point. On an average day in the Eastern United States, you can see fourteen miles, due to tiny sulfate particulates that scatter sunlight. Without human-made air pollution, you could see forty-five-plus miles.

Freese discusses fairly the dispute about mountain top/valley fill mining, that it is "pitting those who want to hang on to dwindling coal jobs against those who hate to see their mountains and valleys forever altered."

Whether you are a conservationist, an industrialist, or both, if you believe in Vince Lombardi's "back to basics" approach, this book has great value.
